I drove the truck for a couple days, then let it sit for about two months. Now it wont come out of revere what can I do two solve this problem. | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 Sir Searchalot | | Sir Searchalot Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 | What tranny? 3sp, 4sp? Does it have linkage or does the shifter go into the top? If it has linkage it is probably a pivit bolt or other link component. Take off tranny floor cover and unhook shifter linkage and see if you can shift it by hand/wrench to be sure it's not an internal thing. If the linkage lets the other gear positions get out of "neutral", it won't shift. They all have to be "timed" using adjustments. Don't know what "shifter" you put on but they have a pull up feature for R and that can malfunction also. Need specific info from you about shifter and trans.

With the shift arms on the side of the transmission housing, see it your can manually shift gears at the transmission. If so, the transmission is probably not the issue and your focus should go the shifter assembly at the end of the mast jacket on the steering column. It is common for this assembly to become worn, out of adjustment or in need of maintenance...or a little of each. Also, it is common for the lower column bearing, to fail and need replacement. In severe cases, the lower shaft bearing has failed and the remainder of the bearing races, have caused excessive wear and removal of a portion of the cross-section of the solid steering column shaft.

Does the transmission have external shift arms? Lets assume it does. Hurst has detailed instructions on how to set-up their shifters / linkage. I had a '70 Nova with a Hurst "Indy" 3 speed floor shifter. It would periodically "hang" when shifting. I re-adjusted it per the Hurst instructions and the problem went away. Hope that helps.
