The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Driveline Clutch noise

After an engine and trans rebuild on my 51 235 start up went well except a ting-ting-ting noise when the clutch is DEPRESSED (Like the noise made when a fan blade is clipping something only not on every revolution). The clutch and trans are late 50's open driveshaft. The throw out bearing is new and correct but when I reach up into the housing to turn it by hand it has spots where it wants to hang up. Do you all think that could be the problem? It shifts and drives fine. It only makes the noise when the pedal is pushed. Any help would be appreciated.

cassie: You might have a presser plate with bad fingers on it. And, you just might have a bad brand new throw out bearing. Look to see if the fingers on the presser plate are all in line with the throw out bearing. Shine a light up into the bell housing and look at how it all is lined up. look for any shiny spots on the fingers and see if they look the same. Also look at the groove in the bearing for any shiny spots there. If all that looks good, then see if any thing is touching the inspection plate. It will leave a shiny spot on that as well. While you have your fingers in there see if the bearing is loose on the shaft. Should not wiggle if you try to rock it on the transmission shaft. If there is just a bit of wiggle you should be OK if it is real loose then it might be time to pull it back off and see what is wrong. Look for a good fit on the release fork and that the fork is smooth. If the fork is rough you will get some noise from there. Some one will have more suggestions. That is what this site is so good at doing. You might also have a loose pilot shaft bushing in the crankshaft. That might make some noise but seems unlikely to me. Let us know what you find.

Should have a bit of grease in the groove where the clutch fork rides, or the nubs on the end of the fork are excessively worn causing the throw out to hang up a bit

Thanks. The pilot bushing is new and the fork is smooth with grease. The only wiggle is in the bearing itself. When I turn it on the sleeve in some places there is no wiggle but at other places there is maybe .020-030". The fork is worn but has been slightly ground smooth. It seems like the bearing is bad after only running one hour. I expected more from a National bearing. The bearing hangs up without any pressure on it.

don't count on any bearing now NOT being made in China regardless of the brand name, I've had throwouts go bad in short times, which is why I like buying local and having a warranty [NAPA]

This bearing was made in Mexico. (Not much different than China). I tried to get one from NAPA but they only sell it with a complete clutch and I thought mine was ok. It just seems like an odd noise for a bad bearing. I guess I will have to pull the trans to find out. Thanks for your input.

There was a reason the noise sounded like something clipping a fan. I have a short water pump from Patrick's with very minimal clearance between the fan and the hb. Pushing on the clutch moved the crankshaft .003 into the fan. Made a sheet metal spacer and no noise! Lesson is to always look for the obvious.
