It's kindof like a horse blanket. I found a guy on Amazon, sells em for $35. You just tell him what color you want and he sends it right away. I'm just using these till I pull the trigger on a recover for the seat.
May not seem like much of a victory however I will take it. The horn would not blow. 12 volts at horn and had continunity through horn. Removed horn and found Mud dobbers nest, cleaned and cleaned. Horn would not blow. Checked cleaned and adjusted points. Still no sound only a click. Soaked the horn in hot water and blew dry. TOOT. Yeah me.
I located and travelled 300 miles to get the "original" 216 stovebolt for my 53 5 window. Now my title number will match the VIN. Also, got the original 53 license plate for it too.

1953 Chevrolet 3100 261 cu inch, sm420, 3.55 rear, torque tube still, omaha orange, still 6 volt, RPO green glass, side carrier spare, all done In the DITY Gallery Video of the 261 running
1964 GMC 1000 305 Big Block V6, sm420, the next cab off restoration
well decided to install new windshield rubber got almost done and cracked the driver side. so ill be buying new glass. at least now i know what to do and what not to do.
Changed the oil and filter on my 1959 235 engine in my 1953 Chevrolet pick up. Oil in filter canister was much dirtier than oil in oil pan. Filter must work.
Got all mechanical done on the new engine install, almost all the wiring is complete. I have two more wiring issues to address, then need to secure all the wires, put oil and coolant in and see if she starts up! Adjust the clutch and I should be good to go.

Sorry you found out the hard way, thankfully pre 54 windshields are relatively inexpensive, imagine doing that to a later curved glass! Good luck next time.....

1950 Chevy Advance Design 3100 in Scotland In the Stovebolt Gallery More pix on Flickr. I've definately got this truck thing in my blood ... my DNA sequence has torque settings "Of all the small nations of this earth, perhaps only the ancient Greeks surpass the Scots in their contribution to mankind" Winston Churchill.
Putting new bed boards on my '40! Had beautiful varnished cherry wood for the bed but even though it looks amazing I keep losing points at the shows so I'm going with original yellow pine pained black.
Found that I didn't use submersible fuel hose to connect the pump to the steel line and it all disintegrated. So, off to find me a section of SAE J30R10 in 3/8". Otherwise, after sitting for a few years with partial fuel, the inside looked great. Including the sender!! Pics to follow eventually.
BTW, looking good inside the tank is in part due to the cleaning and coating products from Eastwood. Unfortunately, the outside shows signs of rust. I used Eastwood Tank Tone Metallic Coating which is supposed to prevent rust. Maybe I didn't coat it enough but I'm pretty sure I did.
Ordered rebuild parts for upper column shifter, resolved my wiring question, all fluids except fuel, this saturday we are going to get it started! woo hoo
Drove to Kentucky to pick up a screaming deal on a pair of 1954 Running Boards (with the step). These puppies look brand spankin' new.... for less than half price of new ones. I'm one happy camper.
Just finished the under cab wiring ( I hope!!) Why'd it take so long you ask?? Delphi connectors. Yeah, I had to get all fancy. Plus, with computer controls come a few more wiring requirements. Sensors, power feeds, etc.
Pulled the front wheels and hubs to do a bearing inspection due to some vibration issues at speeds over 40MPH. Always fun on a big bolt, more so when they have a full load in the back. Everything looked ok, but looks like I need tie rod ends. My R/H joint is a bit wobbly and they both have a big flat spot.
I dig all cars, old and new, whether they were hammered out of American iron, German steel, or Japanese tin cans. Being unable to appreciate them all is missing out on a world of great things. But thats just MY opinion! :P
Took the starter off the '51 project to do a visual inspection. It wasn't engaging when I hit the foot stomp. Nothing was gummed up after 48 years, so I'm thinking I didn't stomp on it hard enough to move the bendix gear into the teeth on the flywheel.
Also installed the new fuel pump I ordered through NAPA. Fit like a glove.

Got it from Classic Parts and it looks like a brand new OEM ..seems to drop in fine and holes line up. Went with the 4 tube one... Should keep the old boy cool. Will surely flush the block before it all goes back together.
Next...some time in the future...will be the R & P swap to 3.55

I havent Been On Here In Quite Some Time But I Sure Have Been Busy With My 50 Chev 3100 Project. Just Got My Engine Back From Getting it Completely Rebuilt, Also Had Them Go Through The Tranny.Last Weekend I Completed Rust Proofing The Frame And Under Cab. For Six Months now, I Have Been Spending A Lot Of Spare Time doing Body Work For A Fresh paint Job. Tomorrow I Will Purchase New Running Boards, Wiring Harness, And Splash Pans. I'm Open For Suggestions On Where To Buy Parts? I Have Been Buying At Classic Industries But Shiping To Va Is Costly. My Goal Is To Be Driving This Thing Near Completion In The Spring. Got A Long Way To Go Since I Have A Stripped Cab Sitting On The Frame Currently.
finished redoing the whole brake system yesterday. (all new wheel cylinders, rebuilt master cylinder, all new springs, brake shoes, stainless steel brake lines, rubber hoses, new parking brake lines).. went to bleed the brakes and as soon as my buddy showed up, it started raining. waiting for him to come over today because as soon as we bleed the brakes, i should be all set to try road testing this beast.
looking at my hands right now, i've noticed that since i got this truck, my knuckles are always f'ed come monday. if you ever lose a day to work on your old chevy, just hit your knuckles with a couple ratchets.
Bit the bullet and spray painted a part of the engine--again. Used the engine gray from Jim Carter.
Tried using a brush and was not happy with the results. Sanded the valve cover smooth and used a spray gun. The block and other parts were acceptable--to me. I think this effort on the cover will pass muster.
Have some experience with spray equipment, but hoped to avoid using it. Now I just might take on the rest of the '46 half ton--eventually. Got lots to do before I get to that stage.
Its accomplished .I got the hood ready today and I also got the inner fenders and the radiator to the sand blaster.I hope if all goes well paint will finally be on the cab by the weekend.
hardshell, check out Top Banana in Roanoke. I got some stuff from them. quality/service was good. i plan to use them more because of shipping. i used jim carter for my 53 at the time he was the closest (that i knew about) i got the t5 fitted for the 65, drive shaft cut and balanced. ready to pull the engine back out and paint the firewall.
Got my new engine in, adjusted clutch then drove it around a bit while making a few timing and throttle adjustments. Hopefully will get my exhaust on this coming friday!
After soaking the cylinders with 30W & Marvel Mystery oil for six months I was finally able to turn the motor over in my 1950 3100 by hand. That stirred me to attempt again to turn it over with the starter. Pulled the starter 1st to make sure the bendix wasn't gummed up & was free to engage the flywheel. It was perfect. Then pulled the valve cover & poured motor oil accross the valve springs & push rods. Reinstalled the starter, put in a fresh battery & hit the foot stomp. It turned over perfectly!!! I was excited!! That was major progress for me in my quest to make this motor run. Hasn't run since 1964. Also installed the new fuel pump I got from NAPA. Once I find a carb & get it installed I'll be ready to try & fire it up!

That will be a great day and one you should try to videotape the process. Then put it on YouTube.
I've already put the girlfriend on notice that she'll be videoing the whole event the day I decide to fire it up. She's been excited about it right along with me!

Calipers and MC powder coated, intake manifold painted to match the block and covers, and the split factory exhaust manifold was done in POR15's manifold paint.
Finally got my truck ready to paint the replacement panels I put on. It has been a busy summer but I should have everything assembled and ready to go in the next week or two. The guy painting it for me lives about 5-10 minutes away, I ended up driving it for the first time since replacing the king pins and getting new tires. It was a good feeling driving down the back roads and not worrying about the truck making a random turn into the nearest ditch.
Exhaust on today, electrical gremlins figured out, that was a combination of the headlight switch, different turn signal with 7 wires not the 4 mine came with then to top it all off still had a bad ground in one of the tail lights. I also pulled the sending unit it appears to have gotten really corroded while the tank was empty, so will be ordering a new one of those. PRODUCTIVE day tomorrow the big clean up!
