I just had my Fenton headers installed and the two mufflers I chose, 24" steel packs, are just too darn loud for me. I love the purr at idle and cruise but it gets that loud rap rap sound as you get up in rpm's and between shifts unless I time the shift carefully. When I had single exhaust with stock exhaust it was too quiet...did not purr or sound like an inline six should sound.
So...what mufflers do you guys with duals like? I was thinking of Flowmasters and there are many models of them and dunno how they all sound.
Also,...could these muffs I have on now cause my engine to over heat...it got up near 212 yesterday !

I had the same problem, first I had glass packs under the cab, Now I have the glass packs AND magnaflows AFTER the rearend, now it is too quiet. I'm pretty sure if you move the mufflers way far back it will be better, but since I have TWO sets of mufflers I don't know for sure. I'm half tempted to have the kid across the street take out the front set and see how it sounds. (he does the best work I have had done on the truck and is real cheap) But I am pretty sure having them WAY back will be better.
No, moving them back will not eliminate the rapping. You get that because of the type of muffler you chose, and because they're 2 feet long. Get a performance type muffler, and you'll be happier.

The mufflers will not cause engine overheating. If the change in the exhaust system requires a change in timing or tune that hasn't been done, that could result in the overheating.
Here is a video clip of a flowmaster 50 (non SUV) on a single straight pipe exhaust, ( )I like the sound on this one, but I have no real world experience with it...I just found this clip the other day. I had glass packs on another vehicle, and found them too loud also...
I KNOW it isn't on a stovebolt, but the Land Cruise inline-6 is supposed to be a copy of the 216 or 235, so good enough for me to get an idea on what it sounds like.
That FM is still a tad too loud but at least it doesn't scream when you put on the gas like mine does.
A friend just called me and I told him about it. He said there's a muff shop in Auburn...29 miles away...that specializes in classic cars/truck muffs. I'll call them tomorrow and drive down if they're open.
As to the over heating, I think my OEM rad is clogged some...could be timing I guess cuz just put on the new intake and dual carbs.

Dogface, as was suggested in another post, ask your overheating question in the engine shop.
I also believe too much tailpipe after the mufflers causes excessive, obnoxious noise. I have generic glaspaks on my '56 (350 engine) with short downturns after. They are sweet and mellow. I wanted the same sound on my Suburban (248 with Fentons). I had the same mufflers installed with long pipes out the back. It was obnoxiously loud when at highway speed. I added two more mufflers near the exits. It is now sweet and mellow going down the highway and gets a good rapping sound going through the gears.

Thanks Cletis, I just wanted to know if the overheating could be from the new duals... I think I know the major problem
As for the pipes/mufflers, I really don't car for the rapping if it's too loud. Small town here and don't wanna draw that kind of attention and don't want a hot rod sound. I looked into the Dyna Flo X and it might be what I want..A friend sent me a YT of it on an old Land Cruiser with straight six...

I'm running about 22" glasspacks with a cross-over tube. It is pretty mild. It is a bit quiet for me but getting better as the mufflers age. The cross-over tube does away with the high pitched rapping you would normally get when you rev it. To me it is just enough difference to know it is not a V8.
Forget the "performance mufflers", put a pair of stock replacement type mufflers for a '70 era Jeep or Cadillac (same muffler, believe it or not). You'll get the rumble at idle, and still be relatively quite at speed. Plus, they much cheaper.
Hey Walter, you have a link to this -> "I looked into the Dyna Flo X and it might be what I want..A friend sent me a YT of it on an old Land Cruiser with straight six..."
OK, sorry about the confusion, I did see that link in your last post, but thought I should be looking for another old Land Cruiser video BTW, I like the sound of that '63 NOVA I'm not one to be too heavy on the gas, and tend to change at lower rpms, so I mostly hear just the low gurgle.

most seem to like Porters the best, the quality of smithy's might have declined over the yrs...

I had some steel pack on but they were way too loud and just changed to a 2 in 2 out Magnaflow. It's sounding nice but still kinda loud really if I accelerate too much in 2nd or third... Before, with the steel glass packs it would Brrrapppp way too loud... had to change that.
Still seems to be over heating so I'm having the block flushed and changing the thermostat...also adding a shrouded elec fan. If that does not solve it I'll get a new rad. I have checked the temp gauge against an infra red heat gun...they match so the overheating is real... got up to 224 one day climbing up a long grade...YIKES

Yikes is right!!! I wonder if a flush will "open" any narrowed passageways...
I'm not a big fan of the bark some of those steel packs put out... I have an old glass pack now...if too loud, I might add a shorter glass pack, or a hiflow cat, and see if it can bring her in just a bit. I just want a little lower tone that stock has to offer.
What if you added a hiflow cat, or a short glass pack to your Magnaflows?
"What if you added a hiflow cat, or a short glass pack to your Magnaflows?"
I have considered just that...or a resonator... I'll give this time though to see how I like it. I should have a friend drive it past me to see how it really sounds.. It does not drone much unless you accelerate past a certain RPM.. I love the rumble at idle

Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm out to lunch here, but the engine really isn't pushing out too much at idle, so I'm thinking it would stay pretty close to what it sounds like now with a straight through short glass pack, but that shorty pack should "absorb" more once you get into it, reducing the noise level when at higher rpms...make any sense???
At least it does in my mind, and why I've been thinking of doing the same...
Anywho...where to put the shorty...I've read both after and before the "bigger" muffler...I'm thinking father upfront like a cat...??? Would this be wrong??
Dunno the answer to that but my muffler guy suggested a short resonator just at the tail pipe end. Still have those steel packs so maybe put them after the Magnaflow... I'll have to ask him and get back to you

I just put a set of generic 18" magnaflows AFTER the rearend (that was the only place the yahoo left me without doing another complete exhaust system) in addition to a set of thrush's version of a cherry bomb under the cab. I am quite happy with it. I have considered having the neighbor kid (he is extremely handy with a welder, plus he actually has a TIG machine) remove the ones under the cab just to see if it was the location that made all that noise or what. I have a suspicion that the braaaaping (as you all have found out is EXTREMELY obnoxious)would be eliminated by leaving just the magnaflows at the extreme rear of the vehicle. However, even though he does high quality work at an extremely reasonable price, it hasn't really festered enough for me to actually do it. However if I do, I will let everyone know how it turns out.
