Does anyone know of a good source for a new wiring harness for a 47 1 1/2 loadmaster? I know there are options and different quality levels, what works and what doesn't? Is there traps to avoid?

Modern harness or vintage looking cloth insulation?

I'd like to look at both although I do intend to go to 12 volt at some point so whatever system I use it must be safe in terms of both for now. My biggest concern is scalability with a somewhat stock look although something modern that is reliable is an option.

Oh and of course I want to find the REAL factory diagram from Chevy not just the Chinese ebay version for $11.45 on CD that is purely generic.

What kind of factory diagram are you looking for?

A 6v harness can handle a 12v conversion.

If you want it to look like an original harness, you'll want a harness with braided wires and original sheath material. If you want extra circuits, you most likely want to go with plastic-covered replacement "upgrade" harness?

I am looking to rewire the whole truck, everything is brittle and in some places the fabric imsulation has just warn off. I'd like to keep the stock looking fuseboxes but am up to more modern blade fuses.

the choice you have is between the original fabric covered style [very pricey] and the more modern plastic covered [much more affordable], don't think you'll find any with blade type fuse panels other than the more 'generic' many circuit kits that provide for all the modern electrical accessories hot rodders want .... Chevs of the 40's and Filling Station are probably closest to you and either should have both styles of original as well as the 'hot rod' type, but there's tons of suppliers listed in the Links section here

Thank you so much this is a great place to start and I'm seeing more options on ebay with the cloth covered wiring as well!

An FYI, the cloth covered harness I bought from YNZ is cloth over the modern PVC coating. It looks original but has modern protection. As Tim stated they are pricy. The one downside I've seen is because of the double insulation the wire is larger in girth than the original which can be an issue when trying to fit a wire bundle through a stock size grommet.

The YNZ harness? The harnesses they sell are appropriate for the application. A harness for your '47 would be made of the same gauge wire as the factory harness, appropriate for 6v. Since 12v pulls less amps it will work well for 12v as well.
