So looking at all the options for fixing my popping out of 3rd gear problem I was wondering if overhauling a 3 speed manual transmission from a 1962 C10 is difficult to do? The closest thing I have to experience in this kind of overhaul is I did the transaxle in my dad's old 1964 Sears tractor and just the axle part of a 67 VW transaxle. If I bought a rebuild kit (several out on the market) is it something a novice can do? Are there special tools involved? Thanks folks, just covering my bases.

These transmissions are not too difficult to rebuild. There is a good breakdown in the shop manual. However the hard parts are getting pricy. The popping out of third gear is an age old problem that has been discussed on this forum numerous times.
It usually comes down to a worn syncro drum, 2-3 shift fork, & side cover. You also want to check your u-joints as they can exacerbate the problem. The last time I checked with my supplier the syncro was about $150, and the shift forks were not available. Bearings, seals, & gaskets are available. I buy these transmissions at the swap meets for under $50 and harvest the useable parts to build overdrives. The gear box portion is the same. If you need additional guidance, send me an a PM or email.
