Welcome to the forums. If you have 8 lug rims your truck is a 3600 or 3800. Going to 5 or 6 lug axles requires major modification. The HiPo shop is the forum for modified trucks.

With money all things are possible. Try stopping in at local tire and spring shops and see if they can help you out.

You need to check out www.droppedaxles.com. Sid is a good guy and can hook you up with whatever you need. I've got one of his 4" axles in front and his 3" blocks out back.

Yes, you could put 15 inch custom rims or 15 inch steel rims off a later model pickup with some lower profile tires and drop it a bit. I'd stay with a fairly narrow tire on the front though as wider tires could increase the effort to steer the truck in tight quarters.

Sid's http://www.droppedaxles.com/ has a great reputation for doing dropped axles right.

Why would you want 6 or 5 lug wheels? 16" with 8x6.5" lug pattern wheels are everywhere and usually cheap if not free
