When I first got my truck it was very hard to turn. I looked at the steering dampener and the rod had a bend in it. I disconnected it and it was much easier to turn. But I don't seem to notice any ill affects from not having it installed, even at highway speeds. Was it for preventing injury if you hit a rock or pothole or was it to reduce shimmy at highway speeds? I am guessing it would only be needed on manual steering as the hydraulics probably achieve the same goal.

Any insight would be helpful - thanks.

not a factory item, no telling why someone added it, maybe when it had some poor bias ply tires or needed some front end work? no use for it with a truck in good condition under normal service

I put one on my truck with manual steering & it made it downright dangerous. Mine went into the bin.

wasn't the intent of the dampener to take a little of the "road feel" out of the steering wheel? Maybe absorb some vibes?

...and as Ted mentioned George, why was it dangerous. We have to know!!

chip - the dampers are meant to prevent shimmy and road wandering caused by surface irregularities and smooth out the feel of the steering, but I think are mostly "needed" on the old vehicles when folks put newer radial sizes on that are too wide for the stock steering geometry or something is badly worn .... some newer vehicles come with them, but mostly you find them on motorcycles and bicycles .... for the dangers, one is that improper sizing or installation can restrict turning one or both ways

You couldn't recover the steering easily after going around a corner. They work good with power steering. I have used them on power steering vehecals before.

Interesting George. By the way - thanks for the column shift linkage - works great and frees up the space beside me for kids!
