helps to state the year you're working with .... some of the trans mount bolts are accessed from inside the bellhousing, check if that's the case with the ones you think are 'broken off flush' ... your shop manual will have the procedure for trans removal, I believe with the torque tube the usual is to drop the rear loose and move it back

It's a 39 Chevy half ton I don't have a manual I pulled the rear apart slide it back but doesn't look like there's enough room to pull it out of the bell housing

Bill gave you a shop manual link in the first reply.
its not a sales ploy like we've become conditioned to... it's just what you need in a link.
Subversive I know...

I highlighted it, to provide you a link to someplace you obviously don't know about, no need to be callin folks names over how the internet works, just hover your pointer over it to see the name

Bill, Not intending to hijack the thread, but are there any sites that you are aware of that would have shop manuals for a newer truck, such as a 1967? The site you linked is amazing, but stops at about 1960.
Thanks!

none I've run across Fred, but many libraries have some manuals, maybe yours does

Ha bill would u happen to know what poss is wrong with my Trans?I know ur not there but driven it oh I just bought this truck first and sec are so loud u can't stay in them for long.I pulled the shifter cover looks like it mite had some water in it no much all the gears are good not missing any teeth. It's 39 half ton I have a spare but some of the teeth on the big gear have chips so I don't want to have to do it twice looking for a cheaper route. I was going to change the fluid and start there thanks Brian

Hi Brian,

No expert here. Closest thing i have in front of me is a car manual for the '39 Chevy year. They say to support the torque tube on a jack , detach and slide the universal ball and collar back on the propeller shaft. Split the universal (usually held together with 4 1/4" bolts and collars. Relieve the pressure on the jack under the torque tube so it lowers down out of the way.
if the transmission has had water in it, there could be some rust on the bearings. There may not be the "cheap" way to fix it short of disassembling it, cleaning up the parts and installing new bearings.
Not sure if any of this helps or not. The link that they were giving you above is at http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com

flushing it out and adding new gear oil would be a good start, might help quiet it down, but it may need an overhaul, the bearings could be shot, and if it's grinding into 2nd and/or 3rd, the syncros could also be a problem .... if you do need to swap, you could always use the gears from the noisy one in the other, maybe make one good out of the 2

A lot of these old transmissions aren't as quiet as their modern counter parts are today. I guess now a days you would use 85w/90 oil or would you want 85w/140?

Just a thought... are you sure it is not the pinion bearing making the noise?
These torque tube setups transfer rear end noise up to the transmission making it sound like trans problems.
Is the noise in all gears?
Is it noisy on the pull and quiet on declaration?
My guess is the front pinion bearing is bad.
