so I have my tranny apart because the speedo was not working, the speedo gears are out now and in my hands they don't mesh?? the drive gear (gear on the shaft) is a worm/spiral gear and the driven gear (one that is threaded to the transmission that the speedo cable goes on) is a 12 tooth, the teeth on it are too big to mesh with the drive gear?? I am assuming that somewhere down the line someone has changed one or both of these gears, does anyone know what came original on these transmissions??? it is a 3 speed trans off of a 1951 chevy 3100 with a 216. gear ratio's are all original.

your help is appreciated!!!

You need a parts book or someone with one.

The parts book calls for gear set 3695417 6-18 teeth.
Fits 1948-54 1/2 ton with 600-16 tires and 4.11 diff.
I can help you out with gears if you can't find any.

You'd need a gear-set that matched your tire diameter and a 3.55 rear end (a 50-55 Powerglide - if those gears work in a manual transmission).

Identifying what set your need, and finding that set to purchase, will be challenging.

Maybe Dave has what you want/need?

I'd find any gear set that will fit your transmission.
Then do a calibration to determine the correction needed.
Then buy an an adapter.
(I have done this - the gear set cost about $50 and the adapter cost about $100 - several years ago).

I do as Tim suggested, I use a speedo correction adapter for 3.5 conversions.
