What am I missing? Many thanks in advance.

I'm not 100% clear on the problem. You have a '66 GMC and you can't get the backup lights to come on when you put the truck in reverse.
I don't think you have to have any other light on for the backup light to function. They have there own circuit..they don't go through any other switch, only the switch that closes when the rig is put into reverse.
Does this truck actually has separate backup light?? You haven't mentioned what type of transmission you have, automatic or standard.
You say you have replaced the reverse backup switch. If you have a circuit tester, you need to verify power on the line side, then verify you have switch closure with power on the load side.
If these prove good, I think the search would be on for broken wires or wires to the wrong place.
Make sure the bulbs are OK and the lights have proper grounds. With a little inexpensive circuit tester, this should be pretty easy to troubleshoot. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

It did not look like it had a separate back-up light. It is an auto trans. The brake, and turn signals work. I'll do the circuit tester. Will keep you guys posted.

I thought I was being asked by atomarc if it had a separate back up light meaning: wiring.
I think I have all the wiring needed for the back up lights to work when engaging in reverse.
Can somebody point to a wiring diagram that shows what goes where in the back of the 66 gmc wideside?
Looks simple enough but you never know.

I had a 73 Van one time which I decided to completely redo the fron brakes with all-new parts.
I got it all put back together but couldn't get any brakes.
I took it to my at-then mechanic about a quarter mile away. He very reluctantly agreed to take a look at it since I had started it.
After informing me that I had put the calipers on the wrong sides, he advised me to stick to drinking beer and ridng my lawnmower, both of which he new I had ample expertise in.
He was puzzled about exactly how I managed to get the calipers on backwards, as that's not s'posed to be possible.
