So i went and looked at a rear end today for the dump truck. Thous it was a p30 van. it was 5 lug front and rear, with bigger lugs than the 5/10 style. Front was drum brakes. im guessing this must have been an early 70's van whic i take as to old for the swap im looking for. any ideas on this thing?

So how big is your dump ruck? A P30 is a 1 ton bread truck.

its a 2 ton truck, that is going to end up a flatbed. Im looking at the p30's because the 10 lug axles i can keep my stock wheels, and get disk brakes and better gearing.

Hi,Piston Farmer. Was the P-30 equipped with an automatic? If so,it may have a "taller" gear than a manual. Since it is a 1-ton, it is more than likely not a 2-speed.I'm not sure about the bigger trucks, but I know that it did make a difference in the '60's-'70's 3/4-tons. I installed an "automatic" (I think 3:73)? rear-end in a '72 G.M.C.,3/4-ton pick-up,which came with a 4-speed/4:11 rear-end,(stock). On a hill,I'd have to start out in "granny",otherwise,I'd end up slipping the clutch. I've driven all kinds of trucks, including semi's for about 35 years. I KNOW how to operate a clutch. That was in a pick-up,with about a 2500 lb.load. Not sure how much weight you're planning on hauling with your 2-ton. Just something to consider. B.T.W.,once you got it up-to-speed,top -end improved considerably. From 55 m.p.h.,to about 68 m.p.h. Also like the disc-brake idea. Good-luck!

Well I finally got the rear end i needed! ITs a dana 80 out of a 95 chevy 3500 hd. so it is disk brake 10 lug and has 5:13 gears. and the price was great.

Now i just need to get the front spindles to adapt to my frontend. Still looking for them but good progress.
