A couple of questions in preparation for swap. This is a 1951 one ton truck with the 2 piece drive shaft.

When removing the drive shaft, will it separate at the knuckle behind the tyranny or do I split it back further so as to use the slip joint? Will the engine, bell and tyranny have to move a bit ahead for it to split at the front knuckle?

Do I separate the foot stomp starter linkage right on top of the starter or at another point?

Where should I separate the clutch linkage?

How does the SM 420 shift lever come out?

My plan is pulling engine, bell housing and tyranny as one piece. I do have the front clip off, the wiring out of the way, Temp gauge and oil pressure gauge disconnected on the engine. Is there anything I am overlooking? I appreciate any tips to ease the pain or enhance the fun. Thanks in advance. Jerry

All these details are in the shop manual. The motor won't come out with the transmission attached.

i was just going to say id leave the tranny in. you will have to seperate the tranny from the bellhouse,, jack under tranny, pull the engine. disconnect tranny from torque tube, put the 235 in, raise the tranny up to it, then re attatch the torque tube. to remove the 420 shifter you spin the collar around ( push in and twist) and then. lift the shiftier out

I've left the transmission in place also. I am glad to see you have the front clip off. That will give you plenty of room as well as an opportunity to 'clean' up the front.

LEAVE the hood on.

Here's a pic of how I blocked up the transmission.

pic 1

And a pic of it cleaned up ready for the 235..

pic 2

And a picture of the 235 installed.

Enjoy...

I believe we are talking about a 1 Ton. You will have to remove the transmission as there is no mount on it.

I did not notice the 1 ton. Couldn't the transmission be supported by a strap or on blocks?

YES ONE TON !!!! 2 Piece Drive Shaft. I asked for HELP to avoid any confusion Yet I get guys "Shooting from the hip" saying Engine , bell and transmission wont come out as a unit but in a couple posts later saying "You will have to remove the transmission as there is no mount on it." Does this mean that I have to jack up the truck front , put on jack stands, REMOVE THE SM 420 from the bell housing from underneath, and then proceed to pull the engine and bell housing from 0ut the front? Again Thanks IN ADVANCE. I want to AVOID pain and ENHANCE The joy of this project. Jerry

I have not done this. The manual says to keep the transmission attached and remove as a unit. Line 26 in the instructions. Page6-21.

Will the 4-speed transmission clear the rear motor-mount frame cross member?

There have been multiple posts in the past saying that it was not possible to get the transmission to clear the crossmember.

The Shop Manuals do say that the engine and transmission can be removed together. They must be referring to a 3-speed transmission - very confusing for novices?

I conclude that I will have to separate the transmission from the bell housing as it will not clear the cross member. Will a transmission jack support it underneath or should I get another cherry picker and support it thru the passenger side door? Does this mean that I won't have to disconnect the drive shaft? What does this set up for surprises as far as alignment etc when Its time to go back together? Maybe I ask too many questions and end up making things worse than they are? And my wife wonders why I drink. LOL Thanks again Jerry

Ask all the questions that you want to. If I remember correctly I unbolted the center hanger, supporting it with a jack and then I unbolted the front u joint and moved the driveshaft out of the way. I initially removed my transmission, minus the shifter using a floor jack and a pile of lumber. I now use a little scissor transmission jack that has a flat pan. I made a wooden jig that fits the bottom of the transmission. I roll up the jack with my jig on top, slip it into place, strap it down, unbolt the transmission and roll it back. When I removed the transmission for a rebuild, I used a cherry picker. Since you are going to remove the engine I would think it would be convenient to use the cherry picker/engine hoist for the transmission too.

I'll stay out of this one so I don't add any confusion to the mix. I'm glad there's a plan anyway. I do like the idea of seperating the transmission from the bell housing.

Personally, I would seperate & drop the tranny just to clean it up & regasket it maybe even paint it. You'll regret not checking it out & cleaning it up when you put the engine back in. I would also replace the u-joints as you'll have it all tore apart anyway. Just my 2 cents. The tranny actually drops out really easy with a floor jack. Anyway keep us posted. Remember to work smarter not harder & to be safe....
