For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Feb 2013 Posts: 56 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2013 Posts: 56 | Hi all, my question today , can anyone comment on what year Chevrolet and Gmc stopped using engine serial numbers and started to use actual v.i.n numbers for there vehicles? The reason is if I am able to locate a vehicle and it needs a different engine , I won't have an issue here in Illinois getting it titled, after talking to the DMV ,I feel this would be a better way to go , instead of renewing the older and smaller engine. We want to do highway driving occasionally and feel the need for a larger engine. Thank you in advance, Pat

You'd want a unique number. The easiest way to do that is to have at least a year code and a unique sequence/serial number (as Chevrolet had on earlier year engines, and, of course, on the cab Vehicle ID).

It was a Series designation with model year and codes for manufacture point and month and unit number. I would say true VIN started as per Wikepedia in 1981, date of standardized VIN. It says first used in 1954. But just like using an engine sn, you really can't call the old system a vin. Thats a problem when they try to relate it all in terms of vin, because the frame number usually does not have the series designation included, thus it confuses someone not familiar with the TF numbering system.
Kicking self for selling off my Taskforce trucks. Still looking for an LCF or conventional big bolt in decent shape.
As of 10-26-2022, A 55.2 Taskforce long bed now the work begins

GMC is a whole different animal
