If the A236xxxx is stamped on a machined cast surface of the block behind the distributor, it's a 236 full oil pressure engine that has been rebuilt sometime.

A px would be nice.

I would be interested in seeing pictures as well. I'm working on a 41'COE, so hearing about and seeing your progress would be great!

I will get a pic posted asap. Odometer shows 11K miles or so. By looking at it and pulling the valve cover and judging the body, I really think that is not rolled over. I understand its a 300 series but what does 302 model depict?. The info I have is that it was a gas hauler parked in western Kansas around 42. Its been sitting with trans fluid loaded up on the pistons, so will try to turn over this weekend.

The "30" in 302 designates the series being 300. The "2" in 302 designates the wheelbase length. EF 302 should be a wheelbase length of about 133 3/4 inches. A EF 301 would be a 300 series with a wheelbase of 108 inches etc.

Eric,

Check out the pics in the link below my name. I have a 1947.1 GMC COE EF-302 model. So far I have rewired her, swapped for an sm420 transmission, rebuilt the driveline and rear axle, all new brakes and brake lines, rebuilt the hydrovac, rebuilt the front axle and steering box/column, cleaned and resealed the gas tank, new fuel lines and much, much more.

Pretty much rebuilt everything needed to drive her down the road with the exception of tires. The engine hasn't had much more than a good cleaning although I did modify and add an HEI from a 292.

Finding a 236 is fun. They aren't really all that common.

Take care, Jeff

I was thinking ?, Wouldn't a 1940 model be a "AF" model, & not a "EF" model. I thought the "EF" models started around 1946.

I thought so also. Is it possible mine has a 40 grill in it? It is an EF model. Is there a way to tell by the serial # on the firewall?

Here is a pic of my COE but still having problems decoding the serial # on the drivers side firewall and trying to determine if the model EF 302 is a 40 like the grill is.

Ok found a truck model ID sheet from old GMC books. The EF-302 was a 1946 truck. Rustednuts, your truck looks identical to mine but u say yours is a 47.1? Did they carry some EF-300 series over with that grill. The book shows 47 48 49 50 yr models are all FC or FCS models. By the way yours is pretty cool!

The unsold 1946 trucks were sold in 1947, hence the 1st series '47 designation. The GMC grill was the same from 1941-47.1 up to at least the 370 series trucks. They also had larger trucks and road tractors that had the grill as a straight up stack of bars like the one pictured below.

Click!

You didn't link a picture! I wanna see it!

This is how the serial number is decoded;

E=1946
F=COE
302=300 series (1 1/2 ton) whilst the '2' means 132 5/8" wheelbase.

Serial number is 896=Meaning the 896th off the assembly line of the 1043 300 series COE trucks built in 1946.

This came with a 236 standard.

The numbers on the drivers side firewall are nonsense and don't mean anything from what I can tell. Look above the spring perch in front of the front axle and see if there is anything written on the outside of the frame on either side of the truck. It may just be a grease pencil mark or stamped there, but GMC's used them until '47.1 and it should show EF-302 also.
