I took a few pictures when I checked mine and thought I'd post them up in the hopes of helping someone else.

------------------

How to check for a fiber or aluminum cam timing gear in a 194-230-250-292 inline six:

First, remove the coil bracket and coil from the head.

Next, clean the area off around the top of the cover with a wire brush and blow the area off with compressed air to prevent debris from falling into the lifter galley. Also clean up the backside of the distributor.

Now loosen the distributor clamp, and slide the distributor out a little. I think I had to move it out 3/8-1/2" or so. An HEI might need to come out all the way, I don't know.

Now remove the three bolts holding the side cover on and remove it.

At this point, get out a mirror on a stick and place it in the lifter galley pointing towards the front of the engine. Shine a flashlight into the hole bored into the front of the lifter galley and look through it. You should see the teeth of the cam timing gear.

Here are a couple pictures I took when I was doing it. http://s1067.photobucket.com/user/66Submarine/library/Chevy%20I-6%20timing%20gear%20check

Hope this helps someone out.

Thanks for posting this.
I never thought about checking a 235 this way, but they have the same hole.
