I just joined Stovebolt and am excited to see so much knowledge and experience being shared. I just started working on a 51 Chevy 5 Window and had the 235 rebuilt. I'm planning on installing the bolt on disc brake set up from Helix and would like to upgrade the 3 gear manual transmission set up to a 5 gear, but don't want to have to purchase a $500 adapter. Anyone have any recommendations on a transmission and rear end set up or experience with the Helix brand set up? Helix seems to be the most affordable. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2013 Posts: 15 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Feb 2013 Posts: 15 | USE A S10 FIVE SPEED, AND A LATE MODEL DISC BRAKE REAR END 58-62 INCHES WIDE DEPENDING ON YOUR WHEEL OFFSET, I HAVE NICE MUSTANG II X MEMBER FOR $330.00 FULLY WELDED | | | | | Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 420 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 420 | use an s-10 rear from a 4wd truck and an s-10 t-5 and go here: www.transmissionadapters.com place called bendtsens i bought my trans adapter for 185.00 and he set me up with a clutch setup and everything and it all slid right together with no problems at all, any problems or questions call bob and tell him what you have and what you want to do, he'll set you up, I did it and my 46 1/2 ton runs great, i put 150 miles on it today | | | | | Joined: Mar 2013 Posts: 2 Moderated | | Moderated Joined: Mar 2013 Posts: 2 | Does the S10 rear end need to be from a specific year? | | | | | Joined: Aug 2012 Posts: 566 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2012 Posts: 566 | I just purchased a t5 and on the 235 clutch housing i did not need an adapter. I think only a spacer is needed if you do not cut the shaft. If you you get a t-5 try and get one from a v6 and make sure it has the mechanical speedo. If you search this sight it has many posts and some articles in the tech tips on t5 conversions
