Saw this today in a truck yard. I think they were using it as a yard goat but it looks like it hasn't moved in a while. I am going to go back and see if they will allow me to get a closer look at it. I am interested to see how they did the ten lug wheels.

I'd be curious to know what drivetrain it has. I'm betting it has a tag axle,not a twin screw. (It'd be cool to find a Twin-Six or a 409 in it. )

Looks like it's going to be a 1963 model C80 series tractor. Someone on this site was looking for one. Might be a 409 V8, the twin 6 engines didn't come in this body style. looks to also have air brakes, or at least air over hydraulic, seeing how it has a air horn on top. Not enough axles, to have a tag axle. Nice looking truck.

Looks good. Right, it's a '63 model by the side emblem. Typical West Coast truck with the Budd Wheels (Hubs). The 10 Lug Hubs should be original for a heavy West Coast truck.

There were hundreds if not thousands of them things hauling grain and rock in Texas in the 60's and early 70's. When gas went from 20¢ to 50¢ a gallon, those that were still in service were scrapped. They were worked hard and its been a long time since I have seen one in the shape as the one pictured. It would probably have been born with a 409, New Process 5 speed and an Eaton Electric 2 speed and straight air. The 10 hole Budd hubs were probably original, but originally it probably had 10.00x20 tires on steel wheel. The tubeless aluminum were probably added later, but they are just a bolt on with no other modification except for longer studs which is an over the counter item. The West Coast still hasn't completely gotten away from 10 hole stud piloted wheels. Other parts of the country stud piloted aluminums are sold for scrap.

what do they use now? hub piloted?

When my dad passed away I inherited the remainder of his trucking company and included is a trailer with about 100 24.5" alcoas and several dozen 11r24.5 Michelin XZE drivers and steer tires. It aounds like it would be hard to find someone that would even want them.

Hub piloted are the standard of the industry now. But there are still a lot of stud piloted around in California. 11R24.5 or tall 24.5 are still widely used by rock haulers and some grain haulers that want more ground clearance or think they just look better on their long nosed Peterbilt. The wheels will sell eventually, but you need to move the tires. They have a date code on them and tires are like watermelons. They don't get better with age.

The tires are all too old to be sold as casings. The newest ones are dated '04. but they would be good to run till smooth then tossed. I have holdups on some of the equipment that are dated 1972 that my dad bought when he was 18.

At any rate, I am going to stop by and see what the story is on the C80. They might let it go for a reasonable price.

Radials are not like bias. With age, the radial wires let loose from the bead and they blow out and the wires can do serious damage to the vehicle. A 10 year old radial has outlived its useful life. If you can find a tire shop that sells used truck tires to people on a low budget, they might possibly take them off your hands and sell them to people who are too dumb to read the date code. Otherwise, be prepared to pay a disposal fee.

You're preaching to the choir. I've welded enough clearance lights, fender brackets and tailight panels back together to know its not a good idea to run old tires.

I have been giving the tires to a couple of local bottom dumpers to run on their trucks. They rarely leave town, are never on the freeway and dont go over 40 mph. They know the tires are old, I tell them they are old and they are fine with it. This will limp them along until California outlaws their old trucks in a year or two.

Yep, thats sort of what I'm looking for, to bad its a 63, I much prefer 456 trucks, but don't get me wrong, its still a nice truck and I would be interested in it, my wife isn't looking over my shoulder is she? oh good. Any way, both my C80s are 10 hole, I think budds were an option over spoke. How about more info and pics?
