New to the site and rebuild and may be a ridiculous question. Without tearing into engine, how do you know if you have a 235 or 216? Rebuilding a 53 Chevy truck. I'd be surprised if it is a 235 but I'm beginning to think it might be.

well if its a later 235, the valve cover is held on by four bolts around the perimeter,

216s and early 235s had 2 bolts in the center of the valve cover keeping it on.

Thanks for your help. That really confirmed my thinking that the valve cover was different.

The best ways to find out what engine you have is to post the Engine Serial number that is pressed into the block just to rear of where the distributor enters the block.

Sometime that code is not enough information and you need to find the casting codes. If you have a four-screw valve cover, here are locations of casting codes.
