Is it OK to tap off the Positive post of the coil or do I have to go through the firewall back to the ignition switch?

You will be sorry if you hook the thermostat up with no relay. It will cause problems at a later date. Too many amps if its good fan. Dont forget and inline fuse! | | |

On my car project, the fan power is direct to the battery thru the relay via 10 ga wire. The fan will run with the ignition off if the engine is hot. I have a water temp switch and an override toggle switch wired to the relay to control the fan along the same lines as the diagram Cletis refered to.

Fans draw LOTS of current and need a relay and a separate manufactures suggested sized fuse in your system. Don't tie it to your coil or ?? adjustable what thermostat?? Gauge wire of appropriate sizing. Think about using/ making a fan shroud. It helps
