It has a well-worn 350 4-bbbl and TH350 in it now. Rather than spend the money on a rebuild or a reman engine, I was thinking of finding a wrecked truck or van with the 5.3L auto for a complete drivetrain swap. Anyone have any experience with this swap, or the same eng/trans into an older Chevy?

I'm not real familiar with the LS motors, but I can't see any reason it wouldn't fit. GM used to put big blocks in vans. I've seen LS engines stuffed into just about everything. Finding a wrecked van with an LS drivetrain would probably be the way to go.

Lots of options from running carb and distributor to EFI on carb intake manifold to aftermarket wiring harness and computer.
I plan to run stock wiring harness and computer and stock fuse block and just power the fuse block and it works like a 2003 Silverado (as soon as I set up an OBDII port for Mr. Goodwrench, then any GM dealership should treat it like a late model and debug and wrench on it). So that's the plan--I have not done it yet.

| | | | | Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 293 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 293 | R-Bo, the electronics part is actually the simplest part of the swap: make sure you get the computer and harness that go with the engine-trans combo, have computer reprogramed and harness modified by a good shop, and it is plug-and-play! And not necessarily more money than switching to carb and distributor.
I have dealt with a place called Speartech for all this: friendly guy, great service.
For swap with these LS engines, read the LS1Tech forum, they have a section about non-stock installations.
