A trusted transmission shop is rebuilding the transmission in my 57 3100 column shift 3 speed. When they tore it apart they found that the main shaft is wallowed out and cannot be saved. They had a parts transmission out of a 58 but the main shaft in it had teeth broken off but did produce several other usable pieces for mine. At this point they said they would need to find a main shaft and they are unsure if their suppliers would have any.

I guess I'll begin searching around to see if I can find another transmission to use as parts. My question is what year range will the internal transmission parts interchange? How long did GM go before making changes? Also is there any difference between the 3 speeds in cars verses the truck?

As always I proud to be a part of the Stovebolt community. You guys are the best. Big thanks in advance.

Bill I appreciate the response and link. As to finding a good used transmission I guess that's why I posted. Knowing what years the internal parts would interchange would aid me in finding a one. I stated that the shop was trusted because they have built transmissions for me on other projects and have always done them right, on time and under budget. They have advised me that the main shaft is no longer made and they would have to find a good used one hence my post. Thanks again for the response and link. Phoneman

I see them on eBay all the time. I would just buy one and tell them to put it in. Unless a shop specializes in classic vehicles, they won't have a book with listings of anything that is no longer made. Just because they can't identify 50 year old parts doesn't mean that they don't know what they are doing. You must remember that a lot of shops charge you for what you don't know. If you go to someone who has the books on these old transmission, you will probably pay for what they know. If these guys know transmissions, you will probably get a better deal from them. The transmission you have is probably one of the simplest ever built.
