I am ready to fire up a 1957 235 in my 1951 1/2 ton pickup. I do not believe that the valve seats have been hardened. Should I use a lead additive in the gasoline?

Are hardened valve seats a waste of money?

As Don posted, neither hardened valve seats nor leaded gasoline are needed in a 216/235/261 engine, unless you are regularly running the engine at very high RPM for long periods.

Either would be waste of money.

High-compression, high-octane, muscle car era engines are another matter.
