want to take out 6 volt generator and install a 12 volt alternator, what size will i need, and can i use same bracket...won't run much off it..what to use for wire harness, off of alt.converting to 12 volts...have a 6 cyl,48 gmc 1/2 ton

A six V harness will easily handle 12v. You'll need a different mounting bracket at the base of the alternator (expensive) and possibly the adjustment bracket as well. I put a 6v alternator on my '38 and was able to re-use the adjustment bracket but just barely. You'll need 12v bulbs and a 12v coil. Some say you'll need to put a resister on your gas gauge but that's not been my experience. It won't hurt to put one on if you wish. You may also end up having an issue with your ammeter on a high output alternator. Mine has been reading wrong lately (showing a discharge when it's in fact charging) and I'm wondering if I didn't overload and damage it with the alternator. The stock ammeter is made to work with a system that rarely puts out more than 20 amps and maxes at about 30 amps. My alternator is 60 amps max and I'm wondering if it didn't damage my ammeter over time when recharging the battery after a difficult (hot) start.
