Here is my new truck and also a picture of what I want it to look like when finished. I plan on keeping the original running gear. Do you think that would be a good idea, or should I upgrade the rearend and transmission? The bodywork and paint I can do myself, so it's not an issue.

Very............nice. I had a look at this dream truck online yesterday and thought it was one of the nicest colors I'd ever seen on these old trucks. Your truck is the perfect candidate to create your dream. I have a friend who has a 53 and he just recently installed patrick gears and is very pleased. She runs along much quieter and he can keep up with everyone on the freeway. Last fall, after 6 years and approximately 4000 hrs my dream has come true. Sometimes I would get discouraged, but the guys in my car club kept telling me to do some little thing everyday towards rebuilding her. Its sure worth the effort, as we have seen from your sample dream picture. Wish I lived in your area it would be fun to help out with some of the restoration. Good luck!!

Very nice! I guess it depends on what you want. Do you want all original or modern highway speed? Trans can be rebuilt and if you want it to go faster than it did in 51 you can swap the ring and pinion. Is the engine original? My 51 is all original. I didn't want to go fast. I wanted it to be like it was in 51. It's your choice. No wrong answers here. Do it like you want it.

Nice truck, you have a lot of work ahead of you.

Be sure to visit the links and tech tips section, linked up above.

Also, get familiar with the Swap Meet section, listed in the forums directory.

I have not run the numbers on the engine yet, but the rest of the truck is very original. It currently has a manual 4 speed in it. I would like it to drive at least 55-60 if possible without changing everything out (I mean transmission or rearend). I don't mind changing internal stuff.

Here is a picture of the last two car I restored for my buddy.

In my NOT-SO EXPERT opinion,I'd go with "Patrick's" gears. They're a great bunch to deal with, and they are NOT out for the money! They're fellow "Bolters",and they stock everything from complete rear-ends,5-speed transmissions, springs, brakes,as well as an assortment of stock engine performance goodies. Go to the link page, and e-mail them for a catalog. You'll be glad you did! I wanted to do an oil-filter installation/up-grade on my 261,since it is an origional "S.C.O." engine. No oil filter.(Oil is filtered through the oil-bath air cleaner). Instead of trying to "Sell" me a filter-installation kit, they actually talked me out of it! That saved me over $150.00!! I like these guys!!

wetwilly,

What is a 261 S.C.O. engine?

What oil is filtered through the oil-bath air cleaner?

Hi,tclederman! Happy New-Year!! My truck (as you probably know),is a '55-2nd-Series 6500. The engine is a 261,and I was COMPLETELY baffled, when I inspected the truck before I bought it. No sign of an oil-filter! I brought a friend out,to take a look, and he was really impressed! He said that I have an "industrial" Chevy engine, usually found on fire-trucks,(which it was),of that era. They were called Self-Cleaning-Oil,or S.C.O.'s. He explained that the engine-oil is channeled through the oil-bath air cleaner, then siphoned back into the block, through vacuum. not quite sure how it works, but it works!! In the "Gallery",Jeff Bradshaw HAD a "55 Task-Force G.M.C. 450,with a 302 S.C.O.,and it WAS a County Maintenance truck. Un-fortunately for Jeff, the truck WAS equipped with a "Micro-lock" brake switch, and he didn't know those things can "Bleed-out",after a time-span.Pic's are worth a thousand words. I change my oil every 1,000-miles,just to be safe. She has between 35-40 P.S.I. when warmed-up,and doesn't use ANY oil. Hope this helps.
