I have a 6 volt tach for a 6 cyl.
It has this box: http://img225.exs.cx/img225/2772/mvc344s0gc.jpg
OK, fairly straight forward, then things get a little complicated. No color coded wires coming from the tach: http://img225.exs.cx/img225/9953/mvc345s4gt.jpg

Any suggestions how to wire this up right the first time without 'toasting' my tach????

Timmer,
You do have a problem for sure. Years ago the manufactures of some products used little tags on the wires so all the wires could be the same color. Then when they were removed and people cut the wiring you are left with your problem. My only suggestion would be to see if you can figure out the mfg. and contact them or take the tack apart and get pics. and send to Sun or Stuart Warner and maybe they can tell you how to hook it up. I would not chance hooking it up because I did that years ago based on the tags being gone and fryed my tach.
Good Luck

The piece that bolts on to the face should have a light bulb in it - take it off and have a look. A lot of old instruments used external lighting. That explains what that pair of wires is for.

The two wires coming out of the case would go to the meter + and - on the box. I would hook one wire up and just touch the other wire to the terminal (while engine running, of course)- if the needle moves backwards - reverse the connections.
