Started looking into sealing factory 3 speed with an automatic. Any one have any suggestions / recommendations or the best auto to put in? Thanks & happy new year to all. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | the biggest problem putting in a modern auto. trans. is you have to remove the crossmember that the bell houseing sits on. A better choice is a later model 4 or 5 speed manual. If you are retaining the stock rear end, an o-drive trans is preferable manual or automatic to give you better highway cruiseing. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum | | | | | Joined: Jul 2010 Posts: 22 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jul 2010 Posts: 22 | Thanks for you thoughts. Thinking more of using an auto from about the same era. Wife loves the Burb but hates the manual. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2007 Posts: 328 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2007 Posts: 328 | How about a nice aluminum Power-glide?
Nothing wrong with these transmissions; cheap and plentiful I imagine.
They put them behind 6s and 8s alike back in the day. Loads of after market parts, upgrades, and support.

I really want to keep the original V6 as it's a real strong engine and maybe replace the rear end with lower gear ratio for highway speeds ( 60 - 75 ). Didn't want to get into a lot of work with the swap if I could get away from it. Would I need to find a powerglide out of a truck or would a car t-mission work? I would think a truck auto might be hard to find? | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,097 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,097 | The GMC has a different bellhousing bolt pattern from a Chevy. It may be the same as BOP. You may need an adaptor for late type transmissions. You will also need to modify the drive shaft, fabricate some sort of auto shifter, & install an oil cooler. Fred
