At a swap meet, I scooped up a '54-'55e GMC truck radio. There is a tag right on the terminal saying "positive ground only" or something like that. Can this radio be used on a negative ground truck? How is this done? Thanks.

It can be used on a negative ground truck but you'll need to visit the radio shop first for an evaluation. The original radios can go both ways (pardon the expression) but replacement transistorized components can not. You'll need to know whether that radio is the 6V or 12V radio also.
Check the number on the case:
22333396 (6V)
22333398 (12V)
This one year radio is so rare it can pass for steak tar-tar.
Keep that radio close cause it's VERY hard to come by.

Time has taken its toll on the paper label. As near as I can determine, the part number is #2233480, and the metal case is stamped 12V.. You can barely make out the old style "gmc" behind the glass, but the rectangular bezel saysz it's either a '54 or 55e..

1954 GMC production is series "Z", Y is 55 2nd, X is 56, T is 57 and S is 58/59.

The application for the part number you provided, 2233480, shows:
22.1480 - Radio
Series STXY (55-59) Models 100-670 conventional cab * 340-550 COE * F650
12 volt radio (replaces 2233398)

We were golden to the last line. "replaces 2233398"
That seems to me to indicate that this radio will fit 54-59 and I don't believe that the '54/'55 radio will fit the '55-'59 trucks, but GMC's Master Parts book tells me it does. If this is correct, then there ain't no such thang as a one year radio for 12V users any more!

Now we need to solve the mystery. Who knows whether or not a '55-'59 GMC radio will fit  a '54/'55?

Send the radio to me and I will see if it fits my 54 GMC! grin

Maybe even a pic of the radio in question will show enough for me to tell if it will fit my truck.
