I have popped out the lights, removed the speedometer cable and know that there are three or four screws or bolts of some unknown size and or type that hold the speedometeer in. I have a whole new gauge assembly to install but I can't really see what I am up against. I have the manual but there is no mention of how to remove the defective gauge. The reason I say defective is that the odometer works but the speedometer does not so I bought a complete new speedometer. | | | | Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 188 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 188 | There's 4 nuts on the back. All of which for me were a pain in the butt to remove. I want to say that they were 3/8ths, but I can't say for sure. The therapy seemed to have help me forget some aspects of removing the beast The nuts are located at 10:30, 1:30, 4:30 and 7:30 if compaired to a clock face.I had the most trouble with the 7:30 nut because of the brace and the nut's close proximity to the cluster gauge right next to it. It can be done, I promise! | | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 4,263 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 4,263 | | | | | Joined: Oct 2012 Posts: 5 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Oct 2012 Posts: 5 | I am sorry, it is a 1953 3100. Thanks f18delta, I will reattack............with a 3/8 nut driver, if you think that will work. | | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 4,263 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 4,263 | Here's a good pic of the 4 studs ...pic... I like to remove the speaker grill for Access I pull the throttle cable also but it's not necessary ...pic... | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 2,393 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 2,393 | It has been suggested before to replace the nuts with wing nuts for easier assembly because you don't have to fumble with a socket or box wrench. Your fingers is more flexible.

I like a nut driver but remember, they come in different lengths so use one that works good...or a 1/4" drive with a short extension. | | | | Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 165 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 165 | Disconnect the battery. I found that a socket with a ujoint or wobble with an extension made the task a easier, but still difficult. Oh yeah, and go ahead and book an appointment with the chiropractor beforehand.

Not sure that wing nuts would help me with these meat hooks that I have. | | |
