There are a couple vendors that reproduce the retractors.

From where cable exits truck side to tailgate is 36 inches. Don't know how much if any still in the retractor on my 49. Good Luck

The cable has to be replaced but is in one piece. The shop doing the work on the '49 has the fittings swaged on by a place that services marine applications.
