Hey guys,

After rebuilding my carb and installing new choke and throttle cables which were missing on my 54 235, I finally got it back running again. I don't have a timing light so i'm just trying to dial it in as close as i can get it. It fires right up now but there is a very slight hesitation (falling on it's face) when i start to give it gas, with more throttle it seams to run just fine, it's just that initial hestation. Does that sound like timing needs to be advanced slightly or reduced? or maybe just a fouled plug?

A little more tining might help it. Look down the carb throat as you work the throttle. There should be a squirt of gas each time. Make sure your float level is not too low. If every thing checks out good you might need to go to a larger metering jet.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

i think the float level was different in the directions on the rebuild kit than what i had looked up previously, so that could be it. Thanks,

May want to check the vacuum advance to be sure its working properly as well. Had the same issue with my 235 the other day and in the end it needed replaced.

Hesitation that you describe is usually a faulty accelerator pump. That's what gives the squirt of gas into the carb throat. If you don't have the squirt, the pump is your problem.

Thanks guys, I took the carb back apart and the float was slightly off and i noticed the pump check valve spring was not seated properly and the pump plunger linkage had come off, so take your pick on the cause, lol. It's running great now, thanks for all the help.
