I am sure this will be an easy question for the Stovebolt crowd - unreal what i have learned so far...! Are the wheel wells supposed to match the body color? Chasing a factory fresh look. Going with a yellow pine bed wood in black and black bed strips.

Yes the wheel wells in the bed are painted the same as the box on Chevys. They were painted black on GMCs. I am glad to hear you are going with black bed floor like original. You see way to many trucks with fancy oak beds.

"fancy oak beds" Nahhh... not for me. That is the 'work end of the truck' and the furniture look should stay in the house. Thanks 66Suburban! Good info on the GMC paint - i learn something new every time in am on the Forum!

Maybe we should start a small support group for those that paint their bed wood. With you all day.

"small support group for those that paint their bed wood"

VERY FUNNY Hambone! I saw a pic of a truck that had a wood called Purple Heart. Cool sorta, but more freaky than anything. It was as purple as Prince album...

I did a little info gathering and like the idea of doing the bed wood out of treated deck boards, milled to size, then painted with a paint that will work - still working on leads and am checking with the paint manufacturers about compatibility with treated wood. Not using latex. Luckily, black is an easy to "hit" and maybe a die type.

...What I have grown fond of is to use the Mar-K pine wood kit, treat it with Smith Penetrating Epoxy then coat with a two part black top coat like Amerlock 400 or AwlGrip Linear Poly Urethane.

The '400 is really tough but will turn gray in the sun so no good for a show type.

The last 2 beds that I did, I used some Cabot's solid stain. The color CAN'T peel off. I had some green color matched by the lumber yard to my Forest Green Chevy. And the Black was easy for the other truck. If a gouge could happen to get deep enough to pass the color, touch-ups are easy. Just some food for thought.

If you haven't visit MAR_K's sight to review their bed wood finish test, then you should. Very comprehensive test over many years. In my case I went with the POR-15 with a black top finish. Like the result. Of course in my case, the truck and bed have been laid up for a couple/few years, so I do not have a real good read on durability.

If you used POR-15 it should be really tough. I have used it a lot and it seems very durable but I have never used it on wood. I might have to give it a try.

The MAR_K site is very cool. I like the idea of 'stain' and a top coat. A hardware store i am in too much, tinted a stain green for me and i have done 2 pieces of ELM furniture with it - top coat in shellac. That would never "go outside" and the tinted base sounds perfect.

Does POR 'soak' into wood?

i saw a 67 with the original black wood and rapped with the owner about it. Truly awesome C10! Truck was granpa's and get this, was stored in a barn under a tarp it's whole life! Jealous? Yup, i am!
