To start with, I have a 50 GMC frame that I've altered the front cross-member to make a 56' 235 engine & bellhousing mount in the gmc frame. It has the stock rear engine cross member. I Am putting a 3 on the tree in it.What years of engine/trans and steering can be assembled together? Does it matter what year trans I use? Also my bellhousing doesn't have the shaft on drivers side of bellhousing for the shift linkage to mount on. Does that matter? Does that shaft press into the bellhousing?Any help will be greatly appreciated. Pics will be a big help. (HELP!!! the hole seems to be getting deeper)Dave

I believe that you're going to need a bell housing out of a 47-53 engine with a three on the tree shifter. You will have to find the appropriate steering column. That would be a gmc or chev three on the tree column from 47-53.
I'm not sure about the trans selection question but I would think that ny three speed from that era should work
Be cognizant on flywheel and starter selection. There is a 138 and 162 Tooth (if I recall) flywheel and starter combination. be sure the starter and flywheel match
Im not sure about your last question on the Shaft. Get somebody else to validate these answers. Good luck

It was on the engine (56 truck) when I rebuilt the engine. That will probably explain why I can't use the stomp starter. The drive gear is different than the starter with the solinoid, not leting it engage with the flywheel. So I will either have to change the flywheel(UGH)or use the newer starter. Does the 138 tooth interchange with the 56 engine? I don't believe the drivegears can be switched. The linkage that connects to the 3 speed connects to a lever that mounts onto a shaft that is on the dr. side of clutchhousing. Is the shaft a press fit into the housing? I have the levers but not the shaft and the spring and hardware that holds the lever onto the shaft. Is the bellhousing different on the 56 than the 50? My bellhousing has a hole on the drivers side for a shaft. Whats thecasting no. for the 47-53 housing? Are you still looking for a heater? mine is still availible. Thanks again for the help, Paul. Dave

The 3-speed shaft on the driver's side of the clutch housing is pressed in.
The geometry of the bottom of the truck clutch housing changed in 1954. The angles in the frame fross member changed.
The 216/235/261 flywheels can be mounted interchangeably. Use the clutch assembly that works on the flywheel you are using (including the throwout bearing). Use the starter that matches the year/teeth for the flywheel, 6v or 12v starter/flywheel combination.
Mechanical foot-operated starters were used up to 1959.

If so, then I can use it with my 139 tooth flywheel, right? And my 4 speed will bolt up right? Is the clutch plate for the 139 tooth flywheel the same as the one I have in there now connected to the 168 tooth flywheel? I don't want to have to take this apart again, so I'm a little gun shy. Again, thanks for your help. Appreciate it MUCH!!! Dave

I run the largest out of a two ton, I believe it is 11" its a a beast, but she dont slip. barks 3rd gear if I want. Flywheel, clutch and pressure plates should act as a set. All should match, Clutch should match grind surface on flywheel, Pressure plate surface should match up to clutch and Bolt circle should match up to flywheel. Get your tape measure out and go through what you got and make sure it all matches. I keep all mine together as sets along with the starter that was with it when removing drivetrains.
