I don't know which setting you could use on a battery charger. 6 volt setting would not fully charge the battery and 12 volt would overcharge the battery and ruin it. If you had a 12 volt generator in your truck, I not sure if the regulator voltage adjustment could be adjusted down enough so that a 12volt generator would produce 8 volts or not. Same as it might be possible to adjust a 6 volt generator's regulator to put out 8 volts. Do you have any generator rebuild shops around close they maybe able to tell you. A 12 volt alternator can be made to put out 8 volts, but you'd have to use one of the older alternators with the seperate regulator not the built in one.  | | |

I know that in the 50's a lot of farmers put 8V batteries in tractors that were hard to start so it would give the starter a little more kick when starting. Those tractors had a cutout on them instead of a regulator which would quick charge the battery up to about 7 to 7.5V and then open a set of points and then charge at about 1 to 2 amps which when runnig the tractor would charge a 8V battery. This system didn't work to well when you ran the lights because the battery would be sucked down since the lights would draw more than 2 amps but it worked OK for day operation. The main drawback was that you had to make sure you checked the water level in the battery often. But these tractors generally didn't come out factory as 8V. If this truck originally came out as 6V and everything is 6V and it starts OK on 6V I would use a 6V otherwise I would convert to a 12V since the parts and batteries are more readilly available.

Alternators in today's current vehicles put out about 14 volt when charging. They HAVE to have a greater voltage than the battery they are charging, otherwise the battery would try to discharge through the alternator. Since voltage is potential energy, and to add to a store of potential energy, you have to have a greater supply than what is in the energy store - a battery can only be charged by a voltage source that is greater than the rating of the battery.
The thing you really need to make sure of is to limit the current going into the battery, and you need to make sure that you don't continue to charge the battery when it is fully charged (don't leave the charger on it). | | |
