ok, to remove a horn button from the steering wheel i thought all you had to do is disconnect the horn so you don't have to listen to it, push down on the button and turn to the left. this approach is not working for me - can someone offer any advice on this "major" procedure?

I just find the notch in the horn cap, insert a screw driver and pry up.

I'm glad you asked that question. I have a 50 Chevy and need to diagnose why the horn won't work. It's button/cap is not round, so can't push in and turn. I can't see a notch....help.

hope we find out something - not at my truck but don't remember a notch of any kind. i am sure someone out there in cyber space will explain it to us. why are the simple things always so complicated?

Up toward the top of the cab "between the letter's V - L" in the words Chevrolet is a little notch where you can pry on the cab to lift it up. Their are 3 big tabs that lock into the actual horn mechanism so it's held on pretty strong....requires some pressure to pull up.

I've removed my horn button a few zillion time, though never looked for the infamous notch. I just disconnect my battery, place a rag onto the steering wheel to protect's it's surface and insert a screwdriver almost anywhere to get it started. Once started I move the screw driver over to the other side and do it again. Off it comes.

Since we are on the horn button, I thought I would take us a little deeper to the nut that holds the steering wheel on and the best way to remove the wheel. I'd like to straighten it out. It currently points at 2 o'clock. (I'm sure the tie rods are the real factor). But my suspension will have to wait for next Summer.Does this require a gear puller?

you can get a steering wheel puller that screws into the two extra threaded holes and makes this job real quick and easy. I bought one years ago to pull clutch bits off motorcycles, and finally, with this truck, I used it for what it was intended for. It has two long bolts you thread into the threaded holes, then turn the big center one and wheel pops right off. Lyle makes one that I think you can get at Pep Boiz or AutoZone or any of them places. You could also make one really easy with a long half inch bolt, and a piece of scrap angle iron, and a couple of bolts from the hardware store. Weld the 1/2 nut to the angle iron in the middle (or use a couple o nuts) and you'd be in business for probably $5 if you went nutz and got some grade 8s.

I have the same tool as arnswine. Very cheap and simple to use. Came very handy when I restored my steering wheel.

Once you have re-positioned the steering wheel correctly you can make a little mark across the end of the steering rod and the inside of the steering wheel so next time you remove it, you'll have a reference. Otherwise you need to always have the steering wheel set exactly at 12:00 position before you remove it.
