Got '66 fleetside with a 4.1LL (250cid) and a Muncie 318 on the column. I've found a 55-57 Muncie 319 on Craigslist. What will it take to stuff the OD trans into my truck? Do I need a different bell housing? Great forum!!

Yes. You might want to trade side covers since the shift levers and linkage would be different.

The stock 66 3 speed is about 15" overall and the OD trans is about 22". It will bolt in but you will need to shorten your driveshaft.

Just so I'm clear...I can use the same bell housing, but will need to shorten the driveshaft and change the cover. Can I take the side cover from the 318 and bolt to the 319? I saw a schedmatic for wiring the solenoid. Any tips you might want to share?

The 318 and 319 are essentially the same transmission with the 319 using the BW overdrive in place of the tail housing on the 318. 319's were used in car and truck applications from 55 through 65. 66-69 used a full syncro Saganaw trans (7 bolt side cover) with a BW OD. There are minor differences between the car and truck transmissions such as the indexing of the shift arms on the side cover and the lower mount bolts are threaded on the truck version. Internal gears are the same in this transmission series. There are some variations such as the mid 60's Chevelle which has different internal gears that will not interchange with the other version. They look similar externally however and will work in other vehicles.
If you need assistance with the OD install give me a call.

Fred - Really appreciate the offer. Going to be a couple of months before I start this project, but will definitely reach out to you when I'm ready.

Here's what I'm considering putting in the 66. Haven't had a chance to get close and personal with the tranny, so don't know if the mounting points, cross-member location, etc. are compatible.

His price is high for a tranny in unknown condition.

I agree with cletis, if the seller had any idea of the condition he wouldn't add "extra 3 speed trans for parts if needed".
Send me a PM, I can recommend some alternatives.
