I followed the links and got the production plant, production year, model, and number off the line produced. But what i am missing and i am not sure if it is in the vin is what are all the finishes or is it left up to the factory to decide how many of each color get produced?

By the way both of my trucks were built in los angeles, ca one is a 1947 the other is a 1949 both 1/2 tons. Although the 1947 is a 3 window and the 1949 is a deluxe 5 window

Sounds like your have an engine number "vin" (most states did that through '55). It won't have any info about finishes or interior. It's not like the modern vin at all. All of that info was on a different plate.

The serial number from the cab will not include any information on the color either. Even the modern 17 digit VINs only have year, manufacturer, make, country of origin, engine option, and sequential production number, but not trim level or color option.

Tiny i have the number off of the title which is the same as the plate inside the door jam on driver side. Thanks for your help too.

Just wondering, what color are your trucks? Forester Green/Juniper Green/Holly Green (depending on year) was the "standard" color on Chevrolet trucks for many years (at least to the late '70s), with other single colors being a no cost "option".

Forester Green was the standard color for all non-Suburban Chevrolet trucks from 1947-1952. Juniper Green was the standard color on all trucks from 1953-55.

A variety of exterior colors were no-added-cost Regular Production Options. The colors available in all Advance-Design years are shown in a Stovebolt.com Tech Tip.

Regarding the title code/number, many people think that it was more common for the engine number to be used as a title umber. That has not been my experience - 50%/50% cab-code/engine-code has been the case with the several trucks that I gave owned.

The 47 was originally, from the story i was told, a fire chief's truck so there is a lot of areas where red is the first color. I am not sure if it is red oxide primer or fire engine red tone. That truck has been resprayed forester green. The previous owners father bought the truck used after the repaint. There are holes in the roof where a siren and light may have been and there are holes in the dash where toggle switches may have been. Its plausible but not confirmed. Also both doors have an area that has been sanded down where a logo would have fit.

The 1949 is a blueish color with some areas of a lighter green shining through.

I plan to restore the 1947, and while i am doing that the 1949 will be my daily so it will be getting a few upgrades so i can stay up with traffic and have no problem driving on highways. I plan to use a 283 for its powerplant with a turbo 400 that i already have. It will get lowered down a little with the solid axle and blocks in the back. Nothing that cannot be undone. I am not too excited about getting involved with the 1949 much. Just make it a driver that wears a presentable coat of paint.
