I bought the truck and she limped home at 15mph up hill. I first checked the plugs and found she was running on 4 cylinders. I replaced the plugs and wires and she ran great. Good power uphill and steady 55mph on the freeway. Last night she had enough and broke down on the freeway. First she started loosing power (back to 15mph uphill) I downshifted to second gear and she gave out. Now when I try to start her the whole truck shakes and rattles violently so I quickly turn it off. Any suggestions out there are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Consider swapping another good running engine instead of rebuilding what you have. It may or may not cost less.. depends on your luck. Properly rebuilding what you have, if it is rebuildable, can be in the $2,000 range.

They all look the same(228-302) on the outside.

'47 GMC 1 ton w/ 302, NP-540, 4wd, full width Blazer front axle.
'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed.
'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.

GMC engines have the displacement as the first 3 numbers of the ser. no., starboard side, STAMPED on a machined pad, behind the distr.

-Yori dont be thrashing it down the freeway, unless you just spent lots of dead presidents on a new motor and even though i did in all my trucks i only run mine at 50 down the free way. the reason i say this is i was in your shoes once and its not fun when your far from home. go over to oldgmctrucks. there are people there in your neck of the woods that might be able to help you out at a reasonable price. | | |
