I have a question about a 1951 3800 Series truck that I am considering. The serial number on the left door hinge pillar is not the number on the title. I think from My experience that the Vin and serial number are the same and should be on the Title. If the title is not right it is a deal breaker to me. Anyone know of exceptions to this? Truck built in Janeville plant in May of 1951 # 2713 Thanks Bill in Illinois.

It could have been titled with the engine serial number, located on a flat spot between the distributor and starter. If it's not that number or the one on the door jamb plate, I agree, no deal.

If the seller is willing to get the title changed to the cab serial number (provided it's titled by the engine serial number), you could ask him to get the title changed, or you could request it to be changed. If it's titled as the engine serial number it's not a big deal.

'Tmater is right about the "vin" often being the engine number pre '56. If the engine was pulled without being re-titled there are often a lot of hoops to jump through. As Tim said, post the VIN here and we should be able to help you.

In Wisconsin if the vehicle still has the original engine in it or available for inspection a state patrol officer can verify the number on the block vs. the title and then will take the VIN plate # and certify it. Then send it all to the state with a title fee and a fresh title comes back with the VIN on it.

My dad bought a 33 dodge coupe out of Montana last year. The serial number on the title was the engine serial number, but since the engine had been changed and the motor mounts for the new engine went over where the engine number was stamped on the frame, they had to have it re-certified. It took a while and they had to jump through hoops but there was no problem getting it done.

Put your VIN number here, if it does not check out, put in the tag number found on the drivers side door pillar. As pointed out by others, the engine number was used by many jurisdictions. If the owner is willing to handle the DMV it may be ok. Does the tag look original to the truck?
