I have a 55 2nd series that I just purchased a couple of weeks ago. When ignition is on tail lights are on all the time, turn on lights and they stay on. No brake lights at all. L&R turn signals function OK.
The other day only one side was on but only when the emergency brake was engauged. Disengauge the e-brake and light went out. When I turned on the lights the other side would light up.
Any imput would be appreciated. | | |
#88984 09/29/2002 6:33 PM | Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,897 Member | | Member Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,897 | I believe you have two problems,One is that the wires going near the park brake/E-brake are getting moved when you move the pedal.(the wires should not move).
.Second, you have either the brake light or tail-light wire (depends on if they are bright=brakes or dim=tail-lights) hooked up to constant power.
.One more thing,look at the engine side of the fire-wall where the brake pedal comes through the fire-wall.You should see a switch that has a lever that is held by the brake pedal in the off position.(It comes on when the pedal lets the switch lever up).That lever may be sticking and not allowing the brake-lights to come on.If it is stuck,work it loose and it may be fine.

#88985 09/30/2002 1:03 AM | Joined: Jul 2000 Posts: 504 Member | | Member Joined: Jul 2000 Posts: 504 | keithw, I can offer some general information about your electrical troubles. The wiring on your truck is very simple and with some patience, I am sure you can conquer your problems..
First step is to locate a shop manual, they are available from Chevy truck parts suppliers or can be found on E Bay. The manual will contain a wiring diagram that will spell out where each and every wire should be connected..
Your tail lites are getting power from the key, they should get power from the head light switch..As mentioned by Mechainiac, your brake lights are powered by a switch . The switch needs constant power on one side, the other side becomes powered when you step on the brakes. That side needs to run to the brake light bulbs..
You may find that your entire lighting system needs to be re-wired. Patching faulty wiring is a frustrating exercise at best..
Look it over wire by wire, figure out where the electricity needs to come from and where it should go..
