This forum seems a little more friendly towards modifing these big Bolts. I could use a few parts and conversations with fellow CCKW guys. Thanks. He put oilfield beds on most of them and used them in his oil production business. I have been looking for one of his old trucks to buy back for some time. They were all used in the Russell, Kansas area. What's the story with the 600-series GMC in the background? The oil rigs are usually really used up. The troop boxes are the hardest to find because everyone took them off to serve whatever purpose the new owners wanted. The '53 GMC 640 in the background is a Ex-Navy, then Ex-USMC 5-ton that runs and drives. It's been Frankenstien'd though, with a '63 534 c.i. F##d Super Duty and a Spicer 5- speed. Also included is a 2 cylinder 3- stage dump system out of the original donor Furd. Strange but true. It sat for 19 years that I know of and I had it running in 2 weeks after it was going to a scrap yard. I got it free. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 170 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 170 | I've been working on the CCKW for a couple of years now. Every nut and bolt has been replaced and a '71 six and trans is being fitted. I shortened the frame 3 feet and it will be a fifth wheel tractor. It will also be Navy Grey as my entire Family history is Navy. It should have been scrapped so I feel free to do what I want to it. Thats what I like about the Stovebolt people at this site, you get support no mater what you do, to a point. engine and trans plant | | | | | Joined: Dec 2011 Posts: 30 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Dec 2011 Posts: 30 | I found one on a dairy farm locally sitting in a barn (I know, I know. cliche) I've been trying to work a deal for a couple of years now. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2010 Posts: 111 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2010 Posts: 111 | Good morning and welcome to the Bolt. Mine missed the war but there is a 1 ton (?) that has been sitting in a barn for who knows how long. Good luck and we will all be glad to chip in.

There are 4 of them on the tandem axles and 2 of them from frame to diff. housing. I really need 2 of them to get the beastie off the jack stands. It's the little brother to th cckw. Stovebolts has been the greatest for the mechanicals and big bolt info I've needed to get this truck back on the road. Another invaluble site is one called G503, it has one forum that is for 2.5 ton military trucks that consists of mostly the GMC cckw "duece and a halfs". It's a very good place to network and find the hard to find parts for your Army Jimmy.

I thought I'd seen it all at your place!!. Let me do a little planning and I'll give you a heads up when I'll see you, thanks again you've been instrumental in my quest for parts. I'll take some pics tonight and post them Thursday.....cheers. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 170 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 170 | Thanks for the info Sleeve, I'll check out the G503 site. I'm looking for the uppers with good rubber. I may just take the whole rear section if it's available. Did that truck come w/ a 270 GMC engine, originally, or a Chevy? 302 GMC's or 292 Chevy's fit in there nicely.
RE; your control rods, if the rubber in the ends is poured into the end, one could gently heat it and make new inserts w/ Teflon or Delrin turned on a lathe for a press fit.
If you live anywhere near Yakima, that would be a good truck to bring to the ATHS national meet next May.

I got it with a 261 retro fit. The 261 was in bad shape so I elscted to install a 292. The 250 in it is for mock-up, same engine mounts as a 292. Also same as a small block chevy if you use the '71 truck mounts. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 90 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 90 | Try G503.com. It's a pretty good site. It started out as a WWII Jeep site but now has forums for anything military vehicle wise or civillian jeep. Parts for sale or wanted to buy or just information. Your pics show more modern axles than mine, mine are side disassemble rather than diff in through the front. Mine was not a 6X6 but rather a tandem, that may be the difference. There are new pieces available to fabricate new torque rods if we can find the correct taper/thread/length, come on up anyway and I'll show you everything again. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy again 1936only, you made a statement that 250s had the same engine mounts as 292s, unfortunately that statement is not true. The 292 engine is the only Chevy engine I know of where the engine mounts are offset, that is to say one side mount is a different distance from the front of the engine than the other, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 170 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 170 | Great call 3B, I assumed the engines interchanged in the trucks without a change in mounts front to rear. Back to the drawing board, although a 250 would work just fine, I really had my mind set on a 292. I 'll be looking for a 292 core I can use. The mounts in the frame are not welded in yet. Looks like another reason to visit....thanks 3B. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 170 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 170 | I'm familiar with fabricating suspension componants in high performance applications, and I'm confident I could fab something up to accomplish the geometry I'm seeing. The Jimmy would never see off road while I own it and it would only be used to drive on good ole pavement with nothing on the chassis, weight wise, except a fifth wheel. By the way 3B do you have a '40's fifth wheel needing a home? | | | | | Joined: Nov 1995 Posts: 5,714 Bond Villain | | Bond Villain Joined: Nov 1995 Posts: 5,714 | Another great info source is steelsoldiers.com
