I am rebuilding my 49 3600. My gas gauge is not working. A prior owner converted to 12v and fried the gauge. A friend that works as an engineer at a local radio station said that he would rewind the coils for me, which he did. When I test the gauge on a bench (my washing machine)it seems to work backwards. I have read a number of threads regarding the fuel gauge, one very good one about testing the gauge on the bench. I'm including a link to a picture on Websots. I connected the pos pole of the battery (6v) to the pole on the left side of the gauge, I grounded the right coil of the gauge and body of the sender. The pole of the sender unit was connected to the right pole of the gauge. I should beable to move the float of the sender unit and cause the needle of the gauge to move. It doesn't. The needle remains pinned to the left (hard empty). If I remove the connection between the sender unit pole and the right pole of the gauge the needle will move slightly to the empty position. My link wasn't working. I'll try again. In the Webshot picture the red positive lead was not connected in the picture, it was when I was testing. The correct link is ( I hope!!)

Instead of trying to link us straight to your photo, link us to your complete photo album. That might work.

Fully ground your sending unit. On the gas guage, on the "F" side, that wire should go to the post on your fuel sending unit. From your power source, i.e battery on your washer or from your ignition switch in the truck, that should go to "E" side of the gas guage. now, with your guage out of the truck, you need to also ground your fuel gauge. When the guage is in the cluster housing that is the ground. With the guage on your washing machine just run a seperate ground wire on the fuel gauge and you should be in business......

Thanks for the input. If you click on the last link it should display the photo. I hooked up the units as you suggested. Am I correct in thinking that if the the sender unit is disconnected from the 'F' pole on the gauge that the needle should register full? The fact that the needle wants to peg to the 'E' side of the gauge makes me wonder if the the coil on the 'F' side may be not working. Any ideas will be appreciated.
