I have a 292 1989 crate motor that was for a large box truck. I put my 72 292 dipstick in and it reads at the very tip, under add a quart. I do have 6 quarts in it now. That is what the Chilton book said for it. Also my intake man. slants to the front like the engine should slant back more. Could I have a 7 quart motor?
I'm not sure, but the box truck might have been a Vulcon, it looked like a 1T with dual wheels. Anyone Help?

Thats what my old motor held. Since this motor was for a larger truck, it might have a deeper pan. It would work harder in a large truck.

Steve, I would just check the intake manifold with a level at the carb plate. It should be level.

Drew does yours slant forward? I did put a level on it, it does slant forward slightly,(the carb plate) about a 1/16th out of level. I set that engine up without the manifold on, OOOOPS. Never thought about it. It's funny, all those years I had that motor and now I just start to notice this stuff. I sent you a PM, my pan is the same. I'll drain the oil and make sure it's 6 quarts. I haven't started the motor yet so there won't be any in the filter. That way I won,t have another OOOOPS. Thanks Drew

Drew I'm leaving for the week, so I wanted to let you know and all, that I did have 6 Quarts in my motor. Drew the stick I am using is the same that was on your engine, so I was using 7 quarts in that motor. I haven't changed the oil since 1989 but it sat all that time till about a year till you came and got it. Had to be the wrong stick. I never realized or gave it a thought. Last couple of years I drove it, I took it to Jiffy Lube. I was lazy and very buisy then and drove it daily for work. It never leaked, so maybe check the seals just to be sure. I put alot of miles on it and when I bought it it had alot back in 84. So there's the answer to 6 or7 quts.
