Just sprayed acrylic enamel w/hardener on my 55. Got some fisheyes on the hood. Do you have to wet sand these out before applying another topcoat? Thanks.

Fish eyes are tough to deal with, especially when using single stage paints such as acrylic enamel. You can water sand and recoat, be sure you feather out the fish eyes well or they will show once you recoat. You can use an aggressive water sand paper, I would normally use 600 grit but 1000 will work fine as well.

When you re-paint the panel, dry spray the affected areas and let the paint flash about 10 minutes to ensure the fish eyes don't resurface. If you are confident the area is fine you can apply 1 to 2 normal wet coats. Best of luck.

Depending on how widespread the fisheyes are you need to remove all of the material that fisheyed. This may be the whole hood if they're wide spread. If you don't the contaminant will likely still be there. After the contaminated material is removed clean the affected area well with a wax & grease remover then proceed with your paint job. I personally would use a primer/surfacer (these days it's commonly called a "high build primer") to build up the feathered area(s) prior to topcoating. A flat area like a hood will show any imperfection. Just hiding the fisheyes will lead to more problems later.

maybe more to the point, Where did these come from?

What sort of filter system do you have set up and what is your prep procedure?

Pic's make all the difference helping you figure it out.

Fisheyes generally come from oil or silicone under the top coat. Back when I was teaching auto body classes in a big high school we started getting a BUNCH of fisheyes in paint jobs. When we finally found the problem, it was caused by one of the students using large quantities of Vaseline Intensive Care lotion to treat a dry skin problem, and rubbing his hands over the body work to check for surface smoothness while he was sanding Bondo and primer. The fisheyes were coming up like popcorn!

just read on the HAMB this morning a guy wanted to know if he could wax his epoxy primer to keep it shiny while he waits to do the body work.... then reveals he's already wiped it down several times with PLEDGE....
