can a coil leak out it's electrical stuff like spark plug wires do? I know that you can see(sometimes) at night when a plug wire might do this, I am speaking of the coil on my 235 eng. Thanks, ,,Fred

Sure. If the tower is cracked or the boot over the tower is cracked, it can leak. You can also get the same thing from carbon tracking or dirt deposits. Easiest way to tell if you have a problem is to hold a grounded, plastic handle screwdriver near the coil tower and see if any spark jumps to the screwdriver. Don't touch the tower, just get near to it. And make sure the ground is secure and your hand isn't touching the metal shaft of the screwdriver. smile

Coils also do get tired over time. They are not big bucks, I replace mine fairly regularly. I encountered somewhere recently (perhaps here, but I think not) that 12 volt systems need a current limiting resister on the low voltage side of the coil, 6 V systems do not. A 6, converted to 12 won't have this resister in place. The coil can get pretty hot if the ignition is left on without the engine running. This will be hard on the coild over time (it could boil out the oil or what ever is inside them). Just a thought

Thanks guys, think that I found the problem that has been giving me fits for a long time, when I pulled the coil wire out of the coil, I found the top of the coil where the coil wire goes in very
corroded, clean it out the best I could with sand paper and so for no more dieing, skiping of the motor,,Fred
