it may have something to do with "copy and paste"

Sorry for the confusion, kept trying to paste my lengthy response and wouldn't accept it. I will try and shorten it. #1 and #6 piston reach TDC at the same time of different strokes. #1 on compression. #6 on exhaust. when baring the engine over observe valve opening and closing on #6 (valve rock). this means #1 on compression, now set valves and check timing with distributor. The same holds true for setting #6 valves, watch for valve rock on #1. The same holds true for #2 and #5 which come up to TDC together and so doe #3 and #4. If rocker shaft not installed then install push rods and observe, much more accurate.

OK thanks for all this info guys. I am going to print it all and head to the garage. Sounds a tad complicated but I will give it my best shot tomorrow

OK think i'm in serious trouble now. I didnt have a dowl or long enough srewdriver as mentioned so I used a straightened coat hangar. I thought i was at tdc of the #1 but I went to go a bit further and now I think it started to go down and now the coathangar is stuck in the $%#@*&% spark plug hole. Is it pinching on the side or what. Can I back up the moter by turning the fan counter clockwise
HELP

OK either you guys are pretty good teachers or I am an exceptional student. The ol beast starts, runs and sounds pretty darn good. I set the measurements to .05 above as someone mentioned. on the in and ex.
Oiling still a problem. No oil coming up to the rocker. I took out the small drain nut on the side and nothing happened. Then I took the head nut out and stuck a coat hangar in wiggled it abit then started it and oil came pouring out the side nut. I replaced the 2 nuts and tried again but still no oil to the rockers. What I dont understand is the head bolt seems to block the oil entrance into the oil tube. Am I making any sence

Ok, while you guys were sleeping I did asearch and read some old files I think my problem is that the head bolt is suppose to have a groove on the side or be drilled up through the centre because oile comes up the head bolt hole when removed. I imagine this is why the rocker ar shaft broke in the first palce. Am I right about bolt and is it better to have a drilled one or somehow cut a groove in it?
Thanks Rick

On a 1958 engine the oil path is up the center from the lifter galley to the bottom of the head bolt. Then it takes a right angle through a 1/16" orifice(most likely plugged on yours), then it turns up to the top of the block. Where it exits the top of the block there is a triangle opening in the head gasket. In this triangle is also the pass side center head bolt. Oil passes through this triangle over and up around this head bolt. Once the oil reaches the top of the head bolt it takes another right turn and goes over to the rocker connecter supply tube. See fig #15

There is a plug under the side cover that gives you assess to the orifice.
Hotrod's dowel and hammer trick will not work on your engine, only 1957 and earlier engines. You would need to try blowing back on the hole that the rocker supply tube fits in to on top of the head, or pull the side cover.

Hi I opened the unpinched the oil tube and stuck a coat hangar down it and it seems to be clear. What is the plug on the side of head for and what will happen or accomplish if i take the side cover off.
Should I not have one of these drilled bolts? the oil seems to be at thre bottom of the head bolt

If the orifice is plugged and you do not want to clean it a drilled head bolt would be another option. Drilled head bolt picture

See Fig #15 in above link

I think the easiest thing for you to do is drill a head bolt.

With the head bolt removed I sprayed some lube cleaner down the pinched oil tube and it came out into the head bolt shaft area. I started the engine and oil came up the hB shaft quickly. So where am I plugged Whe I put the HB in there is no oil. I am going to put the HB back in and leave the oil tube unpinched and see if it comes up the oil tube

Starting to make some headway. Put HB back in and started motoor. Oil came up the unpinched tube for a while . Oil came out the first rocker on each side of the tube. Then the oil seemed to go the tube a bit and I repinched the tube. Oil came out 2 rockers on the front shaft and 2/3 on the back shaft

I was sorry to hear about your trouble with a piece of wire down the spark plug, I have no right to tell you 'I told you so'. But I must mention as a retired Diesel Mechanic, Marine Engineer, my training would not allow me such practise. A thumb or whistle in the spark plug hole would give you the same result, I'm sure that you have learned a valuable lesson here. Please remember some of my favourite expressions. 'the long way around is the shortest way home' and 'I'd rather be 10 minutes late in this life than 10 minutes early for the next'. Good luck with your project.
