Here's a video of our 1950 Chevy 3600. We just finished installing the new wiring harness and gauges.

The only issue we have right now is that the gas gauge won't move passed 1/4 tank. The needle has moved passed before, so the gauge is OK. We have the sender grounded well. I guess we need a new sender.

Anyway, this is a collection of video clips from the first 43 miles we put on the truck since we bought it 2 years ago. We took a drive to a gas station, gassed up, grabbed some hamburger rolls, and then decided to "risk it" and take a drive to a friends house (15+ miles or so there). Truck made it fine! We wound up coming home in the dark, but the new headlights are very bright.



The truck makes a strange shuddering sound not a quite a knocking though. The sound is not heard at idle or slow speeds. If you fast forward to 1:33 in the video, you can hear the sound very clearly. The truck does need a new exhaust pipe and muffler. Exhaust pipe is missing, and hole in the muffler, so it will quiet down once those things are replaced.

Anyone have a clue what's the deal here? Really hope it's not the engine. It does leak some oil, but after tightening some bolts, it appears to have slowed down. Should finish tightening them. Oil pressure reads fine and steady, and so does temperature.

Other than that, the truck is nice and tight. No stalls or anything, we had a good time, and hopefully can get out again.

hard to make out the sound, could just be an exhaust leak at the manifold. Check for evidence of a leak between the manifold and head.

That is a nice video! What headlights do you have in it? They seem to be really nice and bright.

I thought I heard some valve noise, but I'm not sure I heard the shuddering knock you mentioned.

Be careful about tightening the cover screws too much....you can deform the cover and it will leak more rather than less. Don't ask how I know this.

That was a neat video ...

I had a noise on acceleration but not at idle and it was the push rod guides that were not replaced at overhaul at the shop the just knurled them and put the old ones back. had them replaced and noise gone.

Might want to warm it up, pull the valve cover and check the valve clearance. Sound could be a bent pushrod.

Nice video, I have to ask what kind of lights do you have? Everyone wishes the lights on the trucks were that bright.Are you running an alternator or generator? Let us all know, we want brighter lights.

I think were going to replace the tail pipe and muffler, quiet the truck down, and then go from there. Can too much valve clearance/bent push rod damage the engine when driving, or is just an annoying sound?
As far as the lights, we're running a generator. No special bulbs, just the ones from Classic Parts. We didn't do anything out of the ordinary, other than clean EVERY contact throughly and make sure all the screws were nice and tight. I'm sure a nice new harness couldn't have hurt! I did notice they were surprisingly bright.
