I have a 62 gmc 1/2 ton and both side windows are cracked. When I bought the truck the previous owner gave me an unbroken set of glass. I just noticed when tinkering with the truck that the cracked ones have the frame around them and the replacements do not. The question is can the frames be removed from the broken glass? Does the frameless glass work with the frames or is there specific glass for the frames? Any vendors sell replacements for the framed glass? Any help would be appreciated, thanks

The framed ones have laminated glass(two sheets of single strength w/plastic in between), the non-framed are tempered glass. Use one or the other.

I believe the metal frames are removable/replaceable, so the glass can be replaced.

Tempered or laminated, the glass is the same thickness. If you decide to eliminate the metal frames, tempered glass, with a heat-treated edge is necessary, to ease the edges & prevent chipping. Either tempered or laminated, can be used with the metal frames.

The replacement door glass is available from:

www.lmctruck.com
www.classicparts.com

I am not awar of any company offering the metal frames. The glass is available in clear or tempered.

Also note if you switch from framed glass to non-framed, you'll need to change the glass channel in both doors that runs from the top front to the bottom rear.

The frameless windows use a glass channel with a small slot to fit the bare glass. The framed windows require a much bigger slot in the channel to accommodate the metal frame.

Thanks for the info guys. I would like to keep the frames if I can. So you think the replacement glass from either classic or LMC will work with the frames? Why such a big difference in price $37 per side vs $110?

Thanks again,
Jeremy

If using frames, the glass can be cut locally out of sheet laminate.
