I've got a 6 volt spotlight mounted to the rear bumber to use as a backup/utility light. I want to run this from a toggle switch on the dash. Can any of you electrical wizards out there tell me what kind of switch to get? TIA

I used a 6 amp 125 VAC toggle switch from Radio Shack. I put it in facing down in a pre-existing hole on the bottom of my dash so I wouldn't have to drill any holes in the face (!!!).
Just a suggestion, pick up a 6 or 12 volt (depending on your truck's voltage) buzzer while you're there, and wire it in parallel with your backup light somewhere behind the dash. It'll sound really annoying when you're backing up, but it'll keep you from accidently driveing down the road with your backup light on and getting pulled over.

How else can you prevent tailgaters?

You need a SPST (single pole single throw), and if you want it to last go for at least 10 amp rating. Rocker, lever, pushbutton will all work.

I just had an evil idea. Put in a clicker pushbutton (push to turn on, push again to turn off) and tell some neophyte that it's your starter button.

Thanks Gents! I went over to Radio Shack at lunch and picked up a 10amp 125 VAC toggle. This should fit the bill nicely. I havent decided yet where I am going to hide it on the dash. I did not go with the buzzer. I probably wouldn't hear it anyway in the cab

You put the buzzer in the cab behind the dash (or wherever) right next to the switch. You'll hear it. It'll also prevent you from accidently leaving the backup light on and running down your battery. Between preventing getting pulled over and the occasional dead battery, it's definately a worthwhile addition.
