I've struck out at all my local flaps and junkyards. My "new" 1948 has 3 shoes on the front that look brand new and one that is ground all the way down to metal. Anyone have a part number or a place to get these?

Plenty of 1/2 ton and 3/4 tons variants available but looks like the 1-ton has larger front brakes?

I had new linings put on mine and I am very happy with them.

Can you give me a rough idea of what that cost? I am waiting for a contact to get back to me on whether I can have this done locally....

I paid $350 CAN for all pads to be blasted / cleaned and relined. They also machined my drums slightly but didn't charge for that.

I keep trying to link a photo, but when I do the post shows up as blank...

Hey Moderator!

I've been reading about this blank posting stuff... I've made an observation that I'm not sure that's been noted yet....

When I use the "Create a link to webpage" button to create a link to a photo, if I use the display text "...click..." the post shows up empty.

The two posts above are the same link, the first I used "PIC" the second "...click..."

Your results look great!! Not in my budget for this, though... It's a rat-rod and I certainly don't need to spend the money on making that part (that will never be seen) sparkle.

Still hoping to find a NAPA part # that will swap in.... but.... starting to suspect I'll just have to have one shoe relined.

48bomb,

Welcome to the StoveBolt forum. Good to se another 1 ton fan. I also live in the twin cities and own a 1950 1 ton. I redid all my brakes last year, had the front shoes relined in Minneapolis, very affordable. Been working great ever since. The company also had all the wheel cylinders & master cylinder in stock. Let us know if we can answer more questions.

Thanks! I'm swapping over to a 1970s C10 dual master cylinder -- NAPA M1880 and O'reilly actually had the wheel cylinders in stock for $38/each.

I pulled out the old brake tees and those cleaned up pretty nice to be reused. I was going to try and salvage the front lines (seemed to not be original) but now I think it's going to just be easier to replace them.

Haven't gotten to the rear brakes yet, but suspect those will take the same R&R as the fronts. I suppose I'll pick up another set of jackstands so that I can pull those apart and see if any of those shoes need to be replaced. (3) of the front shoes measure 3/16" of lining remaining -- I compared it to a new NAPA shoe (that was the wrong size) and they only had 1/4" of material.

I'm going to make another thread in a couple of days on towing, but... has anyone ever towed with one of these with the 235? I only tow my boat 1-mile @ 25mph but I'd like to do it with this truck. The boat trailer has dual axles, dual brakes and weighs about 6500lbs.

Thought I heard someone mention that they were able to swap in the newer Bendix brakes on the old style backing plates. Parts are a little cheaper and easier to obtain.

Thanks man,

although that was the result of a $14 gravity fed sandblaster and a $10 rattle can of silver paint!

I just wanted to inhibit rust down the road.

Your biggest hurdle will be with rear drums - as they're not reman'd anywhere...

Doh! Hopefully the drums on the back are in as good of shape as I found the drums to be in the front. I'm sure I'm not done with headaches, though....

!!! Man -- I love this forum! This message (and I received a PM about a guy with 2 parts trucks that is near me.) Amazing!

I'll send you a PM when I figure out what I need. In order to do that, I need to figure out how to remove the rear drum. I found a service manual and it said that I did not have to remove the hub flange and hub to remove it.... but.... I'm not seeing any other way?

Dropped off the front brake shoes at Brake and Equipment Warehouse in Minneapolis. They recommended that I do all four (no surprise here.) They had the linings in stock. $80 will get me all new shoes and hardware. I thought that was very reasonable.

Any more insight on how I can remove the rear drums? I'm not sure on the forum etiquette for this. Should I make a new thread?

Drums, read that part of your service manual first, start a new thread if still necessary.

Thanks,
Grigg

I have a 1953 1 ton Chevrolet long box pickup and a and a 1950 1 Ton GMC, both Canadian trucks. I couldn't find shoes for them either. the 1950 has the earlier design and the 1953 has the more modern design of brakes. (drums are almost interchangeable but need a small modication to work.) I had my existing shoes re-lined for about $50 each wheel pair, two days time and everything works really well.

I think we would be very interested in the small modification to the drums that was mentioned. The one tough part with these old 1 Tons is finding drums.

I believe that the 1950 drums had a slightly larger inside flange, and I had to turn about 1/16" off the inner edge closest to the backing plate to make them fit, if my memory serves me correctly.

I had my brake shoes for my 49 one ton relined from Jim Carter, I am very pleased.
